How many gal grow bag would you use?

I live in Southern Calif and I would like to do an outdoor grow how many gal grow bag would use? What I am thinking about doing is dig down about half the height of the bag and about 6 inches all the way around so their is some air movementall around the bag but the sun does not heat the bag to bad and cook the roots. What do you guys think? THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL HELP.

From what I have heard that you get a better harvest growing in bags more air to the roots. The reason I would like to set them inside of a hole is to keep the sun off of the bag so the roots stay cooler most of the bags that I have seen are dark in color. I am looking for lighter colored bags.

Thats just not true. Dig a good size hole and fill it with good soil. That will outdo a grow bag any day

Look into smartpots...they are aerated fabric so the sun cooking your roots will not be a problem.... if you still want to put them in the ground smartpots are perfect bc the roots will grow through the bag into the surrounding soil, all but eliminating the risk of getting root bound....

I grew 2 MK plants using 5 gal smartpots outdoors without putting them in the ground and got 1/2 lb each. If you put them halfway in the ground you can top that easily... keep in mind i LSTd them too using a bonsai method

Sorry guys!!

I messed up I ment smart pots not grow bags. Also part of the reason that I need to dig a hole is I have a shit load of gophers and groung squarles so anytime we plant anything in the ground we have to put down wire so they do not eat the roots ect. Its nice to have the room that I do but it is a pain in the ass trying to keep the pests away like rodents, bug, chickens and of course the kind that walk on 2 legs!! I am trying to think of everything that I can do to make the grow go right and have a nice harvest.
