How long until seeds sprout above soil?

I planted some germinated seeds in MG and have kept the soil moderately wet. It's been 48 hours and still no sprouts showing above soil. Should I be nervous or does it take longer?

Also, am I correct in thinking they don't need light until they sprout above soil?

Wow, I just noticed that one of my plants actually is barely above soil. It's sort of weird though, it looks like a bent stem showing above soil with both ends under soil. I'm guessing this is normal?

sorry for the noob questions.. as you can see I'm like a parent hovering over their newborn! :D

yeah that's what they look like before they straighten up. It usually takes about 3 days from seed untill they're standing straight up(at least in my experiance).

Hehe.. looks like I need to just be patient. Now several of them have straightened out and couple others are just beginning to.

DirtyBoy, yeah.. hopefully 6 months. ;)

I'm starting another three today. Total I should have between 10-15 outdoors by mid to late May hopefully.

Got to love how three so far sprouted on 4/20; hopefully thats a good sign. :D Two of which are under CFL's and one if placed by a massive "sun" window. (built specifically for plants pretty much) I'm curious to see how they do in that window.

keep the soil moist to wet! stick a light on for 18 hours a day. water when soil is dry not cracked!

Ive had good luck with germinating when I let the taproot get to be just under 1" long. Once its that long I plant it (root down) about 1" under the soil. Seems to work well for me.

depends on the type of light your using. If its cfl you can put them 2 inches from the top.ive had seedlings grow into my floro lights and not get burnt.if your using a hid light keep it around a foot and a half or 2 feet depending on the wattage.

I've only sprouted seeds twice. My first time was too long ago to remember. More recently though I did 10 seeds in a cup of water for 24 hours then switched them to a damp cotton cloth inside a ziplock bag. After I put them in the ziplock bag I didn't check them for 48 hours. 5 of them had sprouts that were 2-3 inches long. I was like holy crap. The other 5 only had sprouts that were the length of the seed itself if not shorter. Interestingly, the short sprouts never grew once they were put into soil, whereas the ones that were 2-3 inches long all came up through the soil within 24 hours. Based on this observation, I'd say the an inch long sprout would be good. Of course, you put the sprout facing down with the seed shell or head towards the top. The problem with sprouts that are too long like mine were is they can be more challenging to plant. That's why I'd say an inch would be good. Why? Well, you will know it is going to actually grow but it won't be too hard to plant. I still don't know what happened with the five seeds that I had that didn't grow. Maybe they were simply bad seeds? It just doesn't make sense because they sprouted and I didn't plant them deeper than 1/4 of an inch? Again, based on my recent experience, I went from dry seed on a Monday and then had seedlings popping up in soil that following Friday. So, it only took 4 days to get them off to a healthy start. From what I've read, times can vary greatly. If you don't see anything within a week, I would begin to worry.

i had seeds in a cup with putrefied water they dropd to the bottom of water after 48hrs. i saw little cracks inside the weeds. so i ahead planted them.
i see long spouts but its been over 4days since planted and i still have about week til are above the soil. starting from seed is the longer way for growing.

(New Grower) just planted some germinated seeds to my grow medium, how long til sprouting above soil? and how much water and light should i give it at this time thanx.:leaf:
