How long to break soil

I planted some new sprouts two days ago. I put them about half an inch under loose potting soil and dribbled a bit of water to seat the sprout. I have not seen any movment in the soil yet and was wondering how long it takes to see it break through?

3-11 days. I say this out of my personal experience, no textbook knowledge or something.
