Hair-er

Check out the 2:50. This also has the terror quite from above around the 1 min mark.

I've partied with Jack, he pronounces it huh - RARE, and not like that announcer, and most people, pronounce it.

It's pronounced like "hair-er". "huh-rare" is incorrect.

Full disclosure: I'm Seattle Hempfest core staff. Other people on core knew him very well. I'm 100% positive that it is NOT huh-rare and that it IS hair-er. That's also how his wikipedia page pronounces it.

However his name is pronounced, he will always be known as the modern Cannabis Movement's first Hemporer. May he rest in peace, comfortable in the knowledge of a good job well done.
It is definitely "Hair-er". Jack used to tell people his last named rhymed with "terror."

This is not a tomato's "tuh-mah-toes" type of thing.. =)

We would not have our modern hemp movement were it not for Jack!

I pronounce " Herer" like "Terrier" (but obviously with a H sound instead of a T)

Jack Herer - Jack Russell Terrier

I'll take your word for the pronunciation, I never had the pleasure of meeting the man himself.

And that was exactly the point I was making, Sir.

I'm laughing because a guy who "knows some people who knew Jack" is telling us what "they" said!

Yes, I know that most people pronounce his name like it rhymes with terror. When Jack said that line, he was making a joke. I've toked with him, and when we were on our second joint, he told me how his name is actually pronounced.

I've also talked with Keith Stroup, of NORML, and everyone pronounces his name stroop. Even his good friends pronounce it that way when mentioning him. Keith's last name is actually pronounced strawp.

Maybe you should look up who Eve Lentz is before you claim I don't know what I'm talking about? I lived with her. I can backup my claims. Can you?

I also used to live with Vivian McPeak.

I'm guessing you might know who that is.

What do you do as "core staff"?

This is a funny thread but I can relate...in our family my dads brother and his children pronounce our last name completely different than we do and they can't explain why...it's always been a head scratcher for us. It's a Hungarian name and we pronounce it like grandma and grandpa did and our uncle and cousins don't

I'm laughing because a guy who "partied with Jack" is telling us how to pronounce his name after smoking 2 joints. Contradicting what I was told by several people who were very close to Jack. Including Jeannie Herer. (She is on Facebook, it's not hard to find her. Go ahead and ask her how her last name is pronounced, if you don't believe me!)

Jeannie gave me this link to the Emperor of Hemp:

At 2:10, it reveals the pronunciation of his last name. (I tried to link directly to the location. You'll just have to advance to 2:10 yourself.)

You did nail Keith's last name, though. I'll give you that one.

But you are wrong about Jack's last names' pronunciation. I very highly doubt his widow is going to give us the wrong pronunciation.

Now let's all smoke pot, and get a bong.. =)

(Also, that video is worth watching, start to finish.)

(Thanks to Jeannie Herer for confirming what I already knew, and providing me with the video link.)

This is effing hilarious. I wish Jack were here to see this adorable little circle jerk about who knew him better when we all know NEITHER of you knew the man personally. I don't even care how it's pronounced anymore. I just want the two of you to piss off. together. I need to go wash my eyeholes.
