How do you pick your strains?

How do I pick my strains? Well I've been breeding for a long time so I look for strains to add to what I already have going on. I look for individual traits that I want to breed into what I already have. I look at breeders who have people posting pictures a lot and once in a while I see something that looks like it would fit my needs, it helps if they add descriptions of taste and buzz etc. I also pick some just to add to cross with an outdoor strain that's my own that always does well in my climate.
But even if you are not breeding the same rules kind of apply.
First narrow down what you want to have on hand to smoke. Do you really like Kush or OG or whatever. Pack your garden with what you like to smoke. Variety is the spice of life, so it's nice to have a bunch of different favorites to choose from. Something from the cookie family if that's your thing and something Lemon especially if you like the Haze stuff, find something with Gas if you like Gas, etc. etc. Eventually that way, when you are in the mood for just about any type of taste or buzz you will have it on hand.
Once you know what you feel like adding then go look for someone who has the best of it. Do you want something fruity on hand? It's nice to have some grape, right? Then go find out who's grape strain sound tasty and if it's not that great keep working till you find the pheno you want. Then bingo, you go that one covered.
That's what I do, I grow plants because I want to have jars of them in my own personal smoke shop and sometimes I just follow the work of a few breeders and decide to give them a chance based on their reputation, but I'll stick only pick strains if I feel like adding them to the stuff I have on hand or because I want them for breeding. If I've already got cookies or diesel or stardog etc, on hand I'm going to pick something else. Sometimes I just get sick of smoking something and don't grow it for a while, but I always have at least a few good examples of all the basics on hand.

When I'm looking for a new strain I start with the breeder and research them on IG. I try to stay away from breeders that I hear have alot of hermi problems, cause I've had a hermi seed my whole crop. Like my last purchase was from Swampboyseeds. I have been dying to try some gear from them. Then I found that Speakeasy seedbank had a 420 deal which was 50 dollars off every pack. So I pulled the trigger on their Guava Jelly cause I was looking for a sweet fruity strain. My next purchase I really want some old school Chem flavors so I will most likely get Dog Patch From Lucky Dog seed company. I have heard some great things about Dog Patch on IG.
I'd say your best bet is to follow all the good breeders on Instagram so you can see all the new drops and just do your research. It's all about what you like to smoke and what flavors your looking for!

Saying “ and still get some decent weed” seems super reductionist. Those pictures @thenotsoesoteric shared are a lot better than “some decent weed”, as are many other cheaper packs

Price means nothing. Research what you buy before you buy.
I've seen a lot of shitty plants from people who spent top dollar on seeds.
My personal example was in 2004. I bought a 10 seed $25 pack of nirvana top 44 while my buddy wanting to show me up bought sensi seed's jack herer for like $360 for 10 seeds. The keeper I found in top 44 blew that jack out of the water. The high times cup winning overpriced jack was harsh and spicy, top 44 was fruity dank.
Price can be an indicator of quality but most time in the seed world it's just hype!

The only times I’ve had a shitty turnout due to genetics were the times I chanced something I didn’t research. I’d take a pack of Bodhi or Hazeman over a freeborn selections or dying breed any day, and I’d be willing to bet the customer wouldn’t complain about the quality.

Exactly. There is no pricing "standard." It's completely arbitrary and a lot of times is a marketing gimmick, i.e. "wow this strain is $500 a pack it must be fire!"
