How do they look?

Bare in mind this is my first grow so advise needed please :)

this is my set up, (the cheap way).. Do you think the light is close enough? The plants are 3 weeks old and they look small compared the other photos I have seen. The 600w hps was about 3 ft away. I moved them so there about a ft away. Are they small because they weren't close enough?

I never had much hope on this one since it sprouted. The leafs went rusty on the first set. Could she survive or am I just wasting my time?

Apart from a broken leaf from bending with tape, I'm guessing the other 2 are fine

Tips needed. :) thanks!

Not feeding yet, I was going to start next week, but not sure if it's abit early? Rain water is all there getting. Could it be humidity? Im abit unorganised lol

it's all I had budget for to be honest, what's the risks using a hps for both? :)
HPS is more of a "red" light to simulate the sun during the natural flower stage, during veg you want more "blue" in the spectrum like the summer sun. HPS bulbs these days usually have more blue than they used to so imo they are fine during veg but they can cause a bit of extra stretch. If you're on a budget stick to HPS just look at the types of bulbs when you replace it.
I've always used HPS for everything except cloning and never had a problem with stretching.

Do you think that's why there growth is slow, because more red spectrum than blue? Great info mate thank you!

No I wouldn't think that's why, are they 3 weeks from sprouting? That's not too slow, you're soil looks quite heavy and barky this could be giving the roots a hard time. If you repot add some perlite or something to break the soil up a bit this gives the roots more oxygen and more room to grow.
Seeds often start slow then take off fast after a few weeks so don't worry too much.

They look green and a bit nutrient deficient, skinny spiney leaves, Probably about a week or two old, overall a 4 out of 10, for the skinny spiney nutrient defecient look. But my own get a 1 for catapiller infestation so u are beating my current ones

HPS is no problem to both Veg and Flower, maybe the stretch occured since the light was so far away initially, also i think the soil is probably contributing to the early burn, it looks kinda 'hot' and i cannot see any perlite in there for drainage.
If you transplant to bigger pots to flower try to add some perlite to allow the soil to breath more and not be so heavy. :leaf:
