How do I know if my plant is too crowed?

So I been growing this Blackjack in veg since The begining of October of last year. I’m new to growing but I believe my plant is doing well. One thing I’m not sure is how do I know if my plant is too crowed. I plan on vegging for another 5 months. I guess my question is what is too bushy? Also should I prune my plant more now? Also what is the difference between pruning and topping?

If you mean the party cup, then yeah, bad first move.

From october to now that should have been a tree. Get rid of the blurple.

It’s growing in a smart pot. I forget the size but it’s pretty big. I was using some cheap grow bulbs before and just switch to a 300 watt LED light. I also had some cheap soil from orchard supply. I changed soil about 3 weeks ago to fox farms. The red cups are growing bean plants for fresh nitrogen for the plant. I’m budget growing lol

I'm frugal as fuck when I'm not bipolar. But something is going wrong there, and I would put my money on a combo of soil and shitty lights.
Power draw at the wall means nothing if the down chain elements are inefficient.

In 6 weeks max, I pretty much overgrow my veg cabinet using simple 23W spiral CFLs hanging close to the plants. I so enjoy having a room for this now, and all the light in the world using only 2 of 15 fixtures at the moment.

Can I get a side picture of your plant?

When I first started I had some cheap soil that just seemed to clump when watered. After several months I eventually switched the soil and my lights. I had the grow lights but I think the issue was the soil. This is what the plant looks like without the LEDS. Btw I’m using one cheap mars 300 watt LED. This is my first grow so all this is learning for me. This is what it looks like without the LEDs. I also messed up and removed some of the main branches while pruning which is why it does look so full.

If that thing has been going since last October
It should be about as big as the bushes in my room lol.

Looks like about a 3 gal.smart pot
You said the soil was clumpy?
As a hydro guy i know you shoulnt be able to ball the soil up means it will drown your roots

Next time mix perlite with your soil til you can clump it but it immediately breaks up by poking at it

As to ehy it is that small I only assume its the

That looks like too much fan too. Heavy direct wind will stunt plants too.

I would bring that light as close to the plant as I could get without bleaching for a start.

I’m Using fox farms ocean forest now. I was told at the hydroponic store that’s all I needed for the soil. For my next transplant then should I add extra perlite?
