how do i kill bugs and not my worms???

Ive got one of those 5 tray vermicomposter things, and some red worms, and their doing good. Problem is I keep getting fruit fly larva and what not in the composter. Is there anyway to kill the bugs, and not the worms?

First get rid of any fresh or recent wastes. Stop feeding for two/three weeks and put it outside -let the remaining larvae fly off as adults. Next time bury your wastes deeper into the tray.

yeah one of my kids threw a bunch of cantaloupe and banana peels on the top. what do you use to layer over the top of your wastes?

If you have fly's your bedding is too wet.

Let it dry out a bit, and mix dry shredded newspaper in with anything wet you put in.

Never too much problems with the banana peels, but the cantaloupe or any melon rinds guarantee fruit flies. Now I just add them once in a while as a treat. The worms do love em.
