I bought a cooking thermometer to stick in the soil to see how hot it is and it is around 94%. is that way to hot?

I thought it was so i moved the light up a little bit.
She's around 2 inches tall and the light is about 5-6 inches above it.

I read that temps are best 72 deg in the dark 80's in the light. Now I have a problem too. I'm running a 400 watt MH and the rooms like 99 degrees. I don't know what to do. I have a direct fan on it. It's a shop dome like MH. ARGHH...

er, get a real thermometer. those cooking therms are not accurate at all at low temps.

also, there is no common metric on soil temps... you want ambient air temps from a couple places in your room.

most books and growers say that 75-85 degrees is the proper range for temps but i have seen some really nice grows in 100 degree weather without cO2 and i was just reading how Earl likes to keep his at like 66 degrees or so :o

if your plants look happy things are ok.

i have a very similar situation also. exept in a 10 feet by 10 feet room, i am using 5x 42watt cfl and 5x 27 watt cfl all these on 24 hours right now for my veg's

humidity lows 57 and highs 73%
temp lows 89 and highs 95 degrees

my clones aint hurting to bad, but everything seems to be slowly growing, going to check ph levels tommorow, i know i need to move some colder/cleaner air in their pronto, but cant afford a vent system at the time.

i have a fan their but it doesnt do much, since all it does is push around the warm air.

i just added another fan with some frozen water bottles infront of them (6) and also added a timer for the lights to cut back on lights to 19 hours of light and 5 of darkness. hopefully that helps them out for the time being.

Heat is a big issue, I was fine in a smallish bedroom with a 1000w hps and 4x 54w t5's, but when I added a 400 mh for veg I absolutely had to put an AC in. Plus its summer now... If you have no way of getting fresh cool air in you absolutely must vent your hot air out.

To wake: are you saying you have 2 spiral CFLS? 75 watts true power or compared to incandesant, which means cfls would be 18watts I believe... Or you have 2 75watt MH's? Also you need to hang the thermo probe from somewhere so it is under the light and at the height of your plant, not the soil temp.

To jojobeans: really 99? is that room temp or under the light temp? if that's room your under light temp is way the fuck to hot. AGAIN you growing in a small space with no ventilation? Also again a cooltube/sealed hood man and PC fans vent that hot ass air right out.
If the cost is the issue... I know I'm broke as fuck and its hard as all this stuff is hella expensive. But I got my nice sealed hood for my 1000w HPS used for 60 bucks and made my vent system for under 20, so ya just have to shop smart be creative and invest a little in it. I want to get a cooltube for my 400w MH, I have a batwing right now but my AC is right in front of it so that helps allot. I've seen them as cheap as $40 used at shops around here.

To goblin: your humidity is fine, I wouldn't say ever over 60% if you can control it, way to hot for cool temp, shoot for 75 cool/85-90max hot, yeah sometimes I get to 95... Probably fine, but shoot for lower.
how the hell is it that hot with cfls?! those things put off almost no heat compared to an HID. hows that happen in a 10x10 room?!. PC case fans and some dryer ducting work great around 20 buck vent system, ie bi-mart $8 for 8ft dryer duct, 2x large 120mm pc case fans at $3 a peice, and old pc power supply if ya have it or a few/one high amp/mA (like 900+ mA or 1amp+) 12v power packs to run a few fans.
Very good to cut back on light to make it cooler, time that during the hottest part of the day.
How old are plants and how cloase are lights? Watering them imediatly after soil dries out? Size of containers?

Got everything et up. Mh in flowering room(see pics). running fan on it blowing through venting to main vent. Still high 94 and that's when I remember to open the doors.
