From what I understand its like a cousin of cannabis. Ph is very close and usually when they grow you pick the largest vine and cut away the rest then you string up to 10-18 ft poleshttp://youtu.be/in2K_6XpC0g a friend of mine grows his and sells em wet to a local brewery he gets paid for the hops and get to try the final product

From a friend of mine who has 3 strains of hops in his yard... the first yr, prolly 2, is just the plant growing, and learning, and training, etc.

Year 3, good cones, plentiful, healthy, cones like a motherfucker....... he said have homebrew buddies ready, you will have a LOT of hops that 3rd season....

Grow them and they WILL sell. Homebrewers and craft beer breweries will buy them all if they are good. An ad in Craigslist will have excess gone in a heartbeat. Hops are very hard to get due to decreased acreage over the years. Most hops in American beer come from overseas at present because of the shortages.

Like someone else said, you're gonna need large poles, with guide wires. The plants grow up the wires, and are VERY heavy when flowering. I'm guessing at least 1/4" and maybe even 1/2" wire? those get HEAVY, running up to 15' or more. We have a lot of Hops farms in Central Valley of Oregon - hell, Cascade and Willamette Hops are named after this area. Rogue Brewery Hops farms are just up the road a bit from me.

You can order roots Nichols Garden Nursery in Albany Oregon, but you need to be quick about it when they get them in stock next season. They sell out quickly. I can't insert link for some reason, nicholsgardennursey.com and check the catalog, or search for hops.

You don't have to worry about soil ph or nearly any other environmental issues when growing hops. The last pics show tons of hops that I just let die on the vine and didn't harvest. They will literally grow over 30 feet per season. I've seen them grow probably 4 inches in a day. They will grow through cracks in doors, through fences, you name it. With the exception of spider mites, nothing can kill them. I home brew, and actually very little are needed to make beer. The main issue you will have is trying to keep them from taking your yard over, much like mint.

This is very interesting to me as Im also a home brewer. Ive thought of growing hops but have never been able to find my "select prefrence". I brerw alot of ales, and i can always find willamette and citra, cascade. These are all popular and very common dry hops I see at the store. Amongst others. And even as far as buying the root rizhomes, same shit, all common.

Does anyone know of a specialty type place. One that has off the wall shit. I could use a good link if anyone has knowlege. Id be interested in chinook, golding and tomahawk.

I planted a small bine last season and was harvesting this season untili tried to transplant. The old bines died of but the new are teaming with growth. Kinda felt like the first time i harvested bud and was super stoked like what to do with this handfull of herb while looking at peoples photos on line holding elbow of the stuff. Good fun either way. Very poisonous to dogs though! heres my last crop
