What's up roll it up. First time postin, lookin for some ideas on a 10 x 20 hoop house in the backyard. I have an idea for what I think I should do. I'm just lookin for some suggestions and maybe some pics of what some of you have done. I was thinking of PVC staked with rebar and and a piece if PVC screwed for the back bone. 6 mil Polly or some shade cloth with 2 to 3 foot of ventilation all the way around. Just something to protect them from the hottest part of the day. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm in the hi desert of Cali so there is some wind and it is dry and hot. I am protected by a privacy fence but the wind does whip through some days. Thanks again.

Carport is the way to go if you have high winds. Anchor them down good though. Anchor the legs at the bottom and have rope running from the top of each leg to each anchor. Maybe add an anchor on each side at the midway point as well. Should make it sturdy enough.

This design is for a large hoophouse, but can be scaled down in length to fit smaller areas while using the same ideas. There are many photos and plans available on-line. Washington State University has an excellent, free publication at: cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/em015/em015.pdf.

but you may well be leaving it too late for this season...?

I strap a couple of 50lb cinder blocks to each carport leg.....the top would tear away before the carport would move....

i just build basic frames out of 2x4 and then use PVC for the roof.

watch out on the 6 mil plastic, it degrades, turns brittle, and tears after a few months.

sink it in concrete footings for peace of mind, imo. it can't be all pvc. you'll need some rigidity. see, what's-his-face's suggestion. a hybrid structure has a lot to offer.
