Homemade Vape(just like the ones in stores!)

Ok i was looking at buying a good vaporizer the other day. I was looking at them down at the headshop and noticed something about them. All they are are soldering irons with bowls screwed to the top of them! So i said fuck this im heading home. Got home about three hours ago and fashioned up this mother fucker.

Heres what you need to make it,

mason jar
solder iron
wire nuts
1/2" copper tubing cap
1/4" 10/32 screw
10/32 tap and drill
Enclosure (Not plastic or anything that can melt at or below 600degrees F)
1' tubing 3/8" outside diameter
a few drill bits and some other everyday tools.
superglue (i used locktight)
silicone(optional)

Ok here is what i pretty much did take the soldering iron and cut the tip off flush so there is just a piece of metal with a flat tip, for a tip. Next take your 10/32 drill and drill about 3/8" deep, not too deep though. No more than a 1/2" i would think. Then tap the hole with the 10/32 tap (this part is not necessary because some screws are self-tapping and just simply screwing the fucker in will tap it for you). Take the 1/2" copper tubing end and drill a 1/8" hole right in the center. You can use a bigger sized cap if you want but try to stick with copper, it is a great conductor of heat! I cut the height of my cap down too, but that again is up to you. Next screw the cap on the tip of the soldering iron.

Now this part is important. You need to pick some type of enclosure to house the soldering iron and for the tubing to run through. I used a 5" x 5" x 5" steel box. Now depending on the iron type you have or purchased the heat range is anywhere from 300 to 500 degrees. Measure the diameter of your iron and cut a hole that size right through the lid in the center. Next cut a 3/8" hole about 3/4" away from the other hole. You can lay the lid of the mason jar on the lid of your enclosure to make sure the holes will line up and not interfere with anything. Next cut another 3/8" hole where ever you want the tube to come out of the box at. All you need to do now is cut a small hole for the power cord.

Cut the power cord about 3 inches down from the iron(make sure you mark your wires!) then feed the other end through the hole you made for the power cord. Use the wire nuts to secure the connection between the correct wires inside the enclosure. Take the metal ring from the lid of the mason jar and superglue it upside down to the lid of you box. Make sure you can screw the jar on or you glued it the wrong way... Anyways you iron and tube should be inside of the ring. I ran a bead of black silicone around the outside just to ensure it was air tight around the lid.

I think thats about it. I am so fucking baked right now. It works, holy fuck does it work. I should have taken pictures as i was building it. I hope this make sense. heres another pic with the jar off the top.

Now i was thinking, you could get a good hakko soldering iron with a digital thermometer on it right, then you can set it only to heat to 175 degrees F i think they dont go any lower then 150 degrees F. Anyways good luck

Here are a few more pics, i took a piece of brass to use for the bowl instead. thanks dunco for the heads up.

Copper gives of toxic fumes when it gets hot
Good call, see i dont know this stuff. Heres what you can do, use something else, i have steel, iron, aluminum, ceramic. I know aluminum is out the picture too. Are any of these ok to use?? probably the ceramic eh??

the soldering iron type vaporizers are junk.period. you cannot control the temp, it will actually begin to burn the weed after a bit, which defeats the purpose of a vaporizer. the only true vaporizers that really work as they are supposed, are the big money digital ones which dont use copper, but ceramic heat elements, and are adj. temp wise. This'll get you high no doubt, and good Mcguyver build though.

I want to try building one of these with a digital thermometer probe inside (already have one) and using an adjustable voltage thingy (name anyone? lol) which would be wired inbetween the wall and the iron. Just keep upping the voltage to make the iron hotter.

Will this work? Or was my 2 quarters of electronics not enough ;p

You can turn up the voltage, but i think you will be safer running higher watts instead of volts. Maybe not burn up the iron as fast. Also i saw a nice iron that you can adjust between 200 F and 900 F, for about 35$ at the science store.

Well that seems like a much better idea to me than cutting and splitting and soldering and messing with voltages...I think last time I tried that mini explosions were involved ;-)

I'm very impressed! I thought "adjustable voltage thingy" was techno-babble, cuz down at HomeDepot they just call it a "light dimmer". LOL

Another thing you can use for a cheap vaporizer is a heat gun, the type they use to put tint on car windows. You need one that has a low heat setting, between 356-392F.

This one 2 Speed Heat Gun is 12 bucks USD and the best part is you can use it with pretty much any piece where it won't burn your hand when you use it (bongs mostly).

Hi guys,
I just discovered a way to make a cheap convection vape. Mine cost around 30-40$, if i count everything, but i had most items already, and the vape is as good as a professional one. The only difference I can tell is that mine has a metal element (from a soldering iron) and a fancy one usually has a ceramic element.

materials:
-cheap soldering iron (10 $)
- 1 test tube (pyrex) a little larger than the shaft of the soldering iron (85cents)
- one pyrex funnel ($12)
- 3 feet of medical grade plastic tubing (cheap)

(these last three things I got from a labratory supply store.)

1) cut off the end of the test tube with a cutting wheel on a dremel, this actually is very easy. now you should have a glass tube, a little longer than the length of the soldering iron's shaft.
2) find something with which to prop up your soldering iron. (in my case, i had a scafolding ground plate with a vertical pipe, just the right size to stick the handle of the iron in it. Eventually I plan to build a box for it, and cut off the handle.)
3) remove the tip of your soldering iron.
4) stick the glass tube you made onto the solderiing irons shaft.
5) stick the small end of the pyrex funnel into the end of your three feet of medical tubing.
6) stick some bud in the deep end of the funnel,
7) plug in your 'vape'
8 ) place the funnel on top of the test tube. (it should be high enough away from the element, so your weed doesn't touch.
9) inhale
10) exhale

the bud does not touch any metal, only glass, there is not even any screen holding the bud back because, the pyres funnel is pretty narrow. The weed is suspended in mid air, and only gets hot once you start sucking air throigh the glass tube (around the element), which heats up the air. The shape of the funnel, insures that there is a perfect fit between the two glass pieces. Eventually, gotta add a dimmer as this thing gets too hot...

I've made some dome-style vapes before, and this is just a million times better. the mist is so concentrated and pure. nothing is wasted. you suck everything out of that little piece of weed. very efficient.

sounds good, gonna give it a shot later when i get paid. Ya i am already sick of this other vape i built, i dunno i guess im not a vape type of guy, sticking to the swisher sweets :)
