its all gravy, i gear it all the time when i take pics cuz if i dont move the lights my camera sees the plant as glowing entities.

i agree my cfl's are slow at vegging. however some people dont have a choice... hps lighting systems have more to it than someone that wants a small personal operation, the reason i cant have one is heat... i have no way to get the heat out safely unless i cut a hole in the side of my house and put an exaust fan there. (grow in my closet) doors have to be shut.
True, 400 watts are pretty warm, but they arent too bad. Your room temp will most likely be around 75 degrees. thats what mine is.

Dude, wait til summer hits, you are going to have to have like 300cfm in there to maintain a temp within 4 degrees of the ambient temp. You'll see.
Peace

Investing in an air cooled hood that has a gasket that keeps it air tight will make a big differerce. You can always vent using a tube like a dryer has and run it to the crack in the closet door.

its been high 80s humid as hell lately. still maintained a cool temp in there. fans keep the heat above the bitches, plus AC helps

IMHO floros are useless. i had my plants under some floros for like 4 weeks and the plants only grew a coupla inches. then i hooked up my 400w MH and the plants started to grow hella fast. floros are lame for vegging
It's a thing of balancing your needs. On the positive, fluoros
1) don't emit much Federali-attracting heat
2) don't use much Federali-attracting energy <<you see a pattern here?
3) cost infinitely less than a full HPS fixture

So if you're a South Philly grower now buying Canadian energy, fluoros are a good bet.

if you're going to go for CFL's, get the 100w (home depot/fluorex) or the 125w from a hydro shop. the small bulbs seem like a real waste of time comparitively.
I went on homedepot.ca and the highest wattage they had on there was 42W.

Why would you buy the home depot 400w HPS for 200 bucks, when you could buy a ready to go remote ballast 400w with a cheapo reflector for like 250?

A 1000w HPS covers an area of about 4x4 sufficiently. I get about 20 plants in that using 3 gallon round pots. I just got 3-gallon square pots and I expect to be able to fit three or four more in there. I found that rotating the outside pots to the inside and more directly under the lights helped also, and I do that every watering.

Don't CFLs actually not put out less heat per lumen than HPS or is that not true?

For me the answer to this would be b/c I'm sketched out about buying growing equipment/supplies online.
