i haven't tested the malawi gold yet, but if it's the more IBL of the the two, i'm inclined to use that. if nothing else, it will be using a "rare" breeder. i selected a 2 option poll and will as that way too if that's how you create a poll.

i'll be using the male to pollinate both strains plus sweet haze, haze skunk, & other test strains too. the jack's cleaner makes nice bud faster and is a 9 week strain, but my pheno had a stony edge too i'd expect the malawi to have less of. that's what i voted for

both strains are lemony and should be trippy. JC2 can be for sure & malawi should be.

lemon skunk x malawi sounds nice & it should be a nice match for hazes and better than afghani at the very least.

malawi x malawi
JC2 x malawi
sweet haze x malawi
haze skunk x malawi
cinderella crosses x malawi
buddha's sister x malawi
pineapple express x malawi
lemon skunk x malawi
jack herer x malawi
lemon thai x malawi
(columbian gold x jamaican lamb's bread) x malawi

and whatever. i already have a bunch of cindy apollo pollinated crosses including some of the strains listed as well as sour cream and an interesting dark red pheno of an auto masterkush with a decent mid buzz on the other end of genetics. i like the idea of using the malawi as my first IBL male. a sour cherry trippy haze from buddha's sister would be nice.

the genes should be new to whatever it's crossed with and i like the idea if saving something of malawi gold before it vanishes all the way. i wonder how ace seeds' MG compares

anyone like the idea of using the faster flowering JC2 better?

malawi gold is a stable land race - i can't vouch that particular seed maker though
ace seeds and cannabiogen both offer a malawi gold that is definitely VERY stable and i personally would use that before ANY jack cross

i bought malawi gold F1s years ago from the original breeder.

i love it and have a few of them in veg.

it's a really nice buzz.

i also have cinderella 88 and apollo 13 that i got from the bros grimm back in the 90s. the cinderella is great and i can't wait to try the cindy/malawi seeds i made last crop.

i should have SOME malawi gold x (C99 x A11) beans. i don't know how mature they are though. my entire grow ended around the 2 month mark when i forgot to turn my fan on for a few hours and everything in my garden got hot spot polka dot burns i can only guess were from the textured reflector. (i still say flat white is a better reflector/diffusor even without the hot spot issue)

i hope the holy smokes gear is legit too. it'll be my job to test it and maybe compare to the other breeders phenos. i waited over a year for afropips' MG to return to stock before finding out bro is blazing with jah now. +REP in peace as always AP

on the topic of african sativas, i was disappointed with durban poison. i mean, i was happy as fuck to be gifted a gram in the mid 90s and tried to score weight for it as NYS had turned to nothing but afghani beaster territory almost a decade earlier, but it just wasn't as potent or trippy as columbian gold. i didn't care at all for the completely authentic licorice flavor or especially the dry heaves that came out of trying to push a trippier buzz with deep hits, but if i had to chose between that and ANY stoner bud, i'd put up with that.

maybe i'll try running ace malawi too. i have a little more info to go on with ace as one of the members here loves his panamas. it's a more expensive version if memory serves me right, and maybe i'll use that as a breeder instead. i'm just after a trippy enough buzz that music comes alive as well as visuals with the euphoric heightened sense of reality that comes at the onset of a real trippy buzz.

as i've been mostly underwhelmed with hazes, though at least DNA sweet haze is nice with some real trippiness, i like the idea of starting new strains with virtually untapped IBLs like malawi gold and asian strains. i REALLY wanted to get results out of my 0% nothing but suicidal mutants vancouver island burmese that i'd bought for $72 total i recall from kindseed. not planning on ever buying VISC or K$ again. i WANTED to use malawi, burmese and C99 to make something way better than skunk #1, but after seeing joey weed's C99s were more clear headed motivation than trippy, i'm inclined to lean towards apollo genius now or whatever the state of the art is nowadays. i've liked every jack hybrid i've tried so far.

as much as i like going against the flow too, malawi sounds at least like something a peep could grow and feel they have something unique & special to put their love into. much respect to all of the head stash growers here that put quality over quantity every time. i'm always butting heads with cash crappers, but some of you here are growing stuff i'm mildly jealous of, but also happy to see being preserved in the post afghani wastelands.

now that i have a heating mat & humidity dome, i'm thinking of giving delta 9's cambodian x cambodian mekong haze a 2nd chance as a 5 pack is under $20 and i was having low viability from strains with seeds twice the size of tiny mekong at the time i couldn't get those to pop. going by the cannabible description, it sounds like at least a top 5 contender for trippiest strain in the world. if that's the case, shrinking that down with today's superior hybrid strains should offer a potentially superior haze 2.0. lemon is a cool flavor to me too.

i'd like to see if malawi x lemon skunk matches high quality seeds' bitchin' potent haze x skunk for THC quality and i bet the 2x lemon flavor would stomp the yucky cheesy cigar wrapper afghani hints in the HQS version. i never budded my sativa seeds' H19 skunk, but it looked to be more IBL than the HQS version. i imagined it being less afghani and better tasting and possibly trippier, though i was really discouraged with the results i got from uppity slow to flower quick to hermie, just like it's IBL rep full moon highland thai. i was happy to see the HS malawi flip without drama and get to budding even faster than schwaggy greenhouse super lemon mutant.

thanks for the feedback. it's nice to know "starting at the source" for best genes is a legit strategy. i'm hoping the holy smokes gear is nicely preserved. it wasn't quite trippy when i early harvested it, but everything i saw told me it might be the real deal even if it flowers faster than typical IBLs. that'd be a good trait for indoor hazes though.

75% malawi & 25% each columbian gold & jamaican sounds like something that should be the opposite of suck. i trust that sannies' genes at least aren't watered down schwag. the lemon thai cross sounds potentially awesome too.

no matter WHAT. i KNOW i love jack's cleaner 2, sweet haze, haze skunk, 8 miles high and get along just fine with cinderella and more common jacks and hazes. anything i can do to improve on those strains is just another degree of WOW! if i laid any of that gear down on the east coast beaster wastelands, at least some people would be so overjoyed that they'd beg to pay top dollar for some of that good stuff the same way i did when i STOPPED bidding on an eighth of delicious original crushed red pepper tasting kali mist at $120 because i have no use whatsoever for indicrap and hated it instantly after $40 quarters of gold were replaced by $50 eigths (WTF?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) "of that "red hair skunk" at the birth of the "bag appeal" myth. i scored around 3 fat grams of 2 early indicas after the paraquat drought that wiped gold off the map (FUCK YOU VERY MUCH UNCLE SAM!) and was livid that no matter how much i smoked of either bud, nothing resembling anything but being tired was ever going to happen. i wanted my money back and started hating dealers when they all turned greedy zombie clone.

i bet a nickel anything i grow and toss at anyone voting here, (so far 4:0 malawi) would at least get a nod of approval if not a wild OMG! freakout like i had after my run in with kali mist. i'll probably keep something stony in my garden "just in case" and for variety, but everything else i grow should be a truly neutral mid like lemon skunk to fucking high as a kite like hopefully malawi delivers.

i still love kali mist, but C99 does most of the same in a fraction of the time and is actually a little easier to slow down on. KM is too racy for anything but activities. the new watered down TASTING version that's just spicy & fruity too doesn't sound as delicious even if the buzz is the same. i wanted to breed that pepper flavor with lemon, orange, cherry, garlic & maybe even licorice for curries.

not seeing cannabiogen or ace malawi at attitude.

i've grown out the apollo 13 a dozen times but i don't think i ever crossed it with anything other than the cindy 88. this cross is lovely. i named it barbi but i guess i should call it cinO. or aperallel? :) i made F2s using 2 cindy males on apollos, and then 2 apollo males on cindys. i have never done a side by side but i'm curious which cross i like better. so many seeds, so little room. :wall:

i have 5 cinderella 88 F1s in the fridge. i should grow them out one of these days. :)

good old paraquat. i was in the phoenix area back then and we got all kinds of great pot flowing through the valley. after paraquat, the mexicans started growing something that they did something too so the leaves looked kind of cheap goldish. it was laughable but i'm sure many people smoked that so so pot and now claim they smoked acapulco gold.

the gold was some great stuff. that genetic, if still alive is in some little village somewhere, being kept alive by a few families who know a good thing when they smoke it.

one of the things i love about the cindy 88 is that for my tastes, she's done at 55 days or so although i let her go to 60. it's such a lovely high. since most of my stuff should go at least 70 days, this helps fill any gaps i may have in fresh smoke. i have about 6 ounces of roach pot. i really need to toss it out but that little voice keeps saying, you may need it someday.

when i first grew out the cindy 88, i didn't like the high. it was too speedy. mr soul said it was very speedy but i thought, how speedy can it be? lol

i love the F2s i made though. i think that maybe the males i used mellowed out the speedy a bit because now it's a favorite. at the moment, i have a few cindy 88s and a few malawi golds going. along with some crosses i made. i'm looking forward to sampling the cindy next to the malawi. i was so busy picking up new genetics, that i often forgot some treasure that i had stashed in the fridge for years.

i never buy F2s. i have no idea what they really are. at least with the original breeder, unless they guy has decided to screw his customers and his business, i know what i'm getting.

there were a handful of breeders when i started. now there are over a hundred mostly doing what we all do in our grow rooms. making crosses. but i don't sell mine for $5 to $10 a seed. lol

i'll match my gear against anyones. regular people always rate my favorite stuff 9s and 10s on my 1 to 10 scale. i must be doing something right. :)

i made some dry ice kief out of some stonehege/skunk #1. it's got me smiling. kief is so smooth on the throat.

i love my skunk #1. i bought it in the 90s when it was still killer. after awile they were handed out like candy by resellers but those skunk #1s are not my Skunk #1s. guaranteed. i'd always keep it in rotation except for space and curiosity to try the next genetic on the list.

here is some of my hard work. i couldn't get all of it into the picture. :)

cool. i got some skunk #1 back in the late 90s and other than it being much better than the pure afghani crap EVERYWHERE & unavoidable but still unacceptable to me. it had no psychoactivity and even at just 25%, the afghani was still way too dominant in the buzz, especially after a couple weeks of stone creep way worse than columbian gold.

if mexicans were faking gold with commercial, they were probably using the same girdling techniques either cutting the stems or tying them off to stop nutrient and water uptake so the green chlorophyll degrades to yellow. that's sad. up until the mid 90s, i still saw a few nice batches of commercial make it to the hood in $5 & $10 sacks i liked better than beasters. i got one particularly good sack with just 2 seeds in it i called spicy as it had the same peppery flavor as kali mist and might even have been a mexican re-plant of it as it had a strong high even in brick form.

i miss my bagseed collection. i had at least 2 dozen differently sourced strains from a straight up skunk in pre-flower through several different mexican sativas. i even had one strain with whirrled phylotaxy (branching in 3s instead of pairs) strain i thought would have been good for bud production.

the joey weed C99 i grew out wasn't too speedy like kali mist, but was more active and clear headed than is fun to chill out on. it makes a good breeder too as it's a 45 day strain. i'm liking the idea of JW's 55 day C99 x A11 crossed with CH9's totally indica looking, but better than mids smoking 50 day or faster jack. that's my idea of a "commercial strain". i'm hoping i have some viable seeds. the jack had huge seeds i think. whatever i get, i bet it's better smoking than afghani, NL5 and all the other stoner strains. i was all set to not like the jack as fat ass as it looked, but it at least smoked acceptably, and any extra stone it has might be countered by cindy's energy.

i'm breeding more strains than i can test, but it never hurts to have a deep collection you can always fall back on or take in new directions.

i'm eager to test CH9's jack 33 against TGA's 3rd dimension to see which one is "the better apollo". TGA's at least promises some nice flavor phenos, but buzz is top priority. i have been neglecting to test faster strains looking for better 10 week ones. there's some nice stuff out there in the 50 day range, stuff way better than longer flowering IBL afghani.

i like the proliferation of smaller breeders. that's where a lot of the most interesting variety comes from. i hated the initial dutch offerings when "skunk #1" was being called a sativa (DNA's lemon skunk is nice, i like that one at least a little) and think the notoriously sweet strains have been overdone, especially when it results in kali mist getting watered down

Reserva Privada's R.K.S. is honestly a nice, old school skunk. Most skunks made today just don't have the 'wreak' that the old skunks had, I'm too young to know what the original skunks were like but old enough to know that 8-10 years ago skunk strains were far superior/stinkier than they are today, that being said I grew out RP's R.K.S. (really killer skunk) and it truly does taste/smell like what I consider "old school skunk." I don't know how she would stand as a breeder but the structure, potency, about all aspects of the grow were really nice, carbon filtration certainly recommended (which should be required for any decent skunk strain of course.) I don't understand why breeder want to call Skunk #1 a Sativa when Skunk is commonly accepted as the very first sativa X indica hybrid from the 70's... is that right?

Old school skunk #1 is approximately 70% sativa 30% indica.

Super Skunk was more or less a bx to an Afghani - assuming it's the same Afghani used for the original breed and is more indica leaning as a result. I might be wrong on the Super Skunk, but I'm pretty sure that was the difference. Skunk #1 was tweaked to be more citrus in it's last iteration and I believe was a bit skunky/fruity previously. I think the Super Skunk is responsible for the RKS most folks remember.

Malberry seeds makes the landrace African's by the way. Holy Smokes just rebrands. You can get them cheaper direct from the source in bulk (ideal for breeding) or alternately you can go through hempdepot who have the best prices on their single seeds and don't try to take credit for them.

Afropips did legit breeding with these landraces, but he has passed on. Good luck.

original skunk #1 is 25% afghani. it was one of the very first original indoor strains. i never saw indicas until the paraquat eradication in the mid 80s turned everything into sea of green. 50% columbian gold, 25% mexican (have seed panama red quoted) & 25% afghani. even when you cut the afghani to 12.5% in haze x skunk though, you can still feel it in your eyes. to me, skunk #1 is an indica despite it's genetic balance. no trippiness and eventually nothing but stone. the columbian is partly at fault there though as pure gold would turn to nothing but stone after a month on non-stop until you took at least a week vacation. haze skunk stays stone free much longer.

skunk #1, william's wonder, northern lights #5, maple leaf indica, afghani and possibly white widow were the first commercially available strains when dutch seeds started showing up advertised in high times. i got a couple catalogues from one of the very first seedbanks, super sativa seed club which was a misnomer as everything they had was a hybrid and bullshit it ain't sativa skunk #1 was "the best" available at the time if you weren't busy collecting mexican brick seeds.

i KNEW i wouldn't like skunk #1 and argued with some guy named kees at SSSC over it trying to talk me into ordering it. apparently he didn't start out spoiled by imported cali grown columbian gold. i was all about thai back then as that's what gold was called, but thai doesn't taste like pine cones, gold does. there might have been a couple other strains in the beginning. there might have been a northern lights #1 too and maybe even ruderalis.

there sure as fuck wasn't any columbian, panama, acapulco, thai, vietnamese blackseed, cambodian, malawi, durban, kerala, or even haze on the seed market yet in the late 80s. i think neville was the first one to bring it back to the scene. it used to be one of the only hazes not more than 10 years ago and it was pretty expensive until it started showing up in crosses and knockoffs.

the first strains that everyone really started talking about by name were all pretty much indicas: white widow, AK-47, blueberry, bubblegum, afghani, northern lights, & skunk #1 (25% afghani = still stoney)

i never liked any of the "bag appeal" propoganda, especially the "mmmmmmm mmmmmmmm mmmmm smell that skunk ass!" pitch, but how red the hairs were, how sticky the buds were, how big the buds were or how dense were all indicators that it's going to suck when you actually smoke it as it has none of the high that good old no bigger than thumb sized, light & fluffy (easy to break apart), pale green with gold pistils, generic wheatgrass tasting & pine cone smelling (actually, always thought the pinecones were the shit, and it was probably just environmental from bein grown in forests anyways) columbian gold buds with their tiny by today's standards fuzzy resin glands that would totally fuck you up if you blazed 4 good sized 1 hitters or cleared a good sized chamber a couple times.

i guess it's settled then, if it's schwag, it's schwag, but malawi gold it is then. i doubt it could be that bad though. as IBL as the 1st one i flowered looked and as stone free as it tested when it got burned early. i'm expecting it to just be a euphoric motivational strain at worst if not seriously sensory fun.

then again, it could be the start of my ultimate personal stash. you can bet i'll make sure to share how the THC profile balances and any other notable personality traits of the malawi. it might not be afropips' original, but should be worth preserving as well as adding fresh genes to the pool.

i think i still have a couple world of seeds' 25% NL5 columbian golds too. it would be fun comparing those too.

sannie's jack f7 x malawi gold
jack's cleaner 2 x malawi gold
sweet haze x malawi gold
haze skunk x malawi gold
lemon skunk x malawi gold
buddha's sister x malawi gold
(jack x cindy apollo) x malawi gold
(sour cream x cindy apollo) x malawi gold
wreckage x malawi gold
critical jack x malawi gold
pineapple express x malawi gold
the third dimension x malawi gold

you'd think SOMETHING in there would be at least smokable heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
i really want to try sannie's jack f7. that should be some really nice lemon haze going by rep & longer flowering time. it's replaceable though. as much as i don't like gambling, malawi should be better than at least a few of the other strains if not all of them. it will be a fun learning experience and going by the votes, something a few here would like some lowdown on. sharing info is almost as fun as testing.

any suggestions for super quality indoor friendly hazes is greatly appreciated. anything better than JC2, haze skunk & sweet haze that isn't crazy expensive (read over $80) would be appreciated. i'm looking at DNA chocolope & cannalope haze and considering mr nice mango haze is i stretched my budget. down the road, i'd like to try 15 week+ strains, but i'm sure there's plenty of nice ones under 12 weeks. 2 of my top 3 favorite strains are just 9 weeks. i wish my sativa seeds' full moon highland thais weren't so IBL prissy. lemon and tutti fruity might be too delicious and the potential trippiness with a twist of hybrid vigor... sorry had to jerk off there a minute.

some day, when i'm in a situation where blazing is happening, i'd like to see how peeps react to my headstash. ideally, i'd like to breed a pepper flavor into a lemon strain. original crushed red pepper tasting and lip burning kali mist would have been perfect unless there's a strain that tastes like black pepper. were it not for the odor, i still like the idea of agent orange x malawi or whoever has the best tasting cali-o.

Skunk #1 has so many phenos now...

cheese, lemon, roadkill (aka through the brick), and a few others i'm sure i'm forgetting. i do like DNA lemon skunk though. the stone is turned down in that one and it looks as classy as it smokes. it's superior quality should hybrid vigor something at least nice with malawi gold, especially if that golden glow it shows were passed to the next generation. take that faked by girdling columbian gold! natural blonde, naturally lemon.
