High Temps and low humidity help!

Hello all, used this site a long time ago but on it again as i'm a little rusty,

Ive got four PPP babies in a 4x4 grow tent with a 400watt hps running in there, as of yet i have no A/C which means that i learnt the hard way how F%*&ing hot tents get, the little buggers suffered up to 102F on the first night until i kept the tent open, which i now keep open constantly, sacrificing a spare room to darkness, The temperature is running at a steady 80-85 degrees now, sometimes getting to 88 because its summer so normal room temperature is about 78 anyway, The humidity is a shocking 30% however i cant explain the dryness? i have a feeling this is not going to be good for them, though they dont seem to be doing as badly as i would have thought, i would post picture but some are still trying to pop their shells off so there isnt much to look at!

I have a 4" fan to run the hot air out of the setup on the way and a humidifier coming tomorrow, have i left it too late? or am i looking at some stunted/runt plants as i assume these early stages of growth are the most important, although its only been 2/3 days? also im poor and the humidifier is eating away at my fan expenses so will only one be enough to suck the heat off that light and pull air in through the vents with air pressure?

sorry the essay, hope someone can help!

Peace

I think from u saying they're 2/3 days old & still popping their shell hats off that they're barely past being germinating seeds (??!). Inwhich case i'd say pop them in a propagator if u got one or else do budget style & put little clingflim tents over each pot rim (prop a few match sticks/plastic stents in soil & wrap cligfilm over top with a few air holes pricked in). U can probably keep them in these up to about 2 weeks & it'll get those humidity levels up which seedlings tend to prefer)

Also seedlings dont always wanna be right close to a big light, so again for first 2 weeks u can lower them 3 feet or so from 400W HPS which might maybe help by taking them into a slightly cooler lower zone. Obviously if ur tent is getting uniformly high temps this won't make much difference, but i'd likely guess its hotter nearer the lights, so be aware for the first 2 weeks u can get away with not having them so close & not losing much growth potential. After 2 weeks tho, certainly then u wanna be getting them as close to lights as possible/manageable, etc so AC would be good then.

Hello, thanks for the reply!

sorry maybe i mis-wrote They are 2/3 days planted, i germinated them for 5 days using the paper towel method and just planted them in the pots the shell/leafy bits sticking out! two out of four have their first and almost second leaves coming out! Thanks this all sounds good, i'm getting temperature's around 80-85 at plant level, its definately much hotter nearer the light, i think maybe your right though, should i do this clingfilm thing and also keep them in the grow tent? my only worry is that this containment might make the plants that much hotter? put a lot of holes in for good circulation maybe? hopefully the humidifier is going to up those levels too, maybe i should have gotten mandala seeds....

by the way these PPP are feminised, do you think that one burst of excessive heat is going to male them, and i hear feminised seeds are fussy f%&*ers, so are potential highs of 88 going to do them harm as well?

thanks for the help!!! will post a grow journal when they look a little better...

peace!

And just re-read ur 2nd paragraph that i forgot about! - if u got gear coming tomorrow then all should be cool anyway - if they don't look wilted & dead already then they'll probably be pretty alright till tomorrow!

I can't remember exact specs for room size/fan size requirements but that 4" should certainly clear a fair bit a heat build-up & running an oscillating desk fan on timer probably wouldn't hurt either. As for humidifier, i've never used one yet but it should do what its meant to & increase humdiity as u desire.

If its posh & has got its own auto-humidity level setting on it then just program in the humidity as u want & leave it on to work automatically. If its only got an on & off switch then u can either leave it on all day or if its power hungry, u can stick it on a cheap programmable timer .
To work out how long to make the timer intervals u just have to manually sit & watch how quick it works to humidify to desired level after being switched on & then how long it takes humidity to drop back to undesired levels after u switch it off. Then u just set the timer so it comes on quick enough each interval to sorta level out the up/down period u just sat thru.

Ah! i see - well, i'd still say they're seedlings still really so clingfilming will be fine to help humidity still but if u do then probably good idea to lower them down away from lights as ur right in that the clingfilm will also trap abit more heat too.

Overall abit of excessive heat shouldn't stunt seedlings as bad as an adult plant might, but the only 2 things i'd restate is that if they look ok & healthy & not obviously stunted then they're more than likely fine anyway, and that if ur getting equipment soon then they will soon be loving it more anyway.

As for stressing them to hermie, i wouldn't have thought that'd be a massively probable outcome - at this early stage if they're seriously not liking the climate then they're probably more likely to just straight away die, long before u got worry about any hermie issues! Fem seeds can be a little more delicate but not to any major degree more than a regular one.

Hey Redwhite....ahh fuck it rainbow man!

thanks a lot for the reassurance, i decided to move the tent to another room that doesen't get the sun so much, bit of hassle but i can do without using it until i get my ventilation! this new room seems to have a bit better of a humidity (its up to 50% now) so maybe i wont even need a humidifier!

cheers for the help y'all

PEACE!

30% humidity I would kill for honestly, in veg its not so bad, most seedlings and clones are under a dome, and in flower I cant seem to run a large enough dehumidifier to get under 45% so yeah......

88 degrees is pretty hot for an indoor room, y not try running ur lights mostly at night, also maybe some air exchange, I think sadly tent mislead people as tents get much hotter then a room does, and tents where designed specifically to be air cooled as well.
