HID Lights and light burn...?

So Im growing in a large room with a 1000w MH (vegging). My temps easily stay between 71-76 during the day and maybe 64 at night. My cool tube is disconnected, so cold air is being pushed over the light and warmed, then going into the room.

Ive read that you can get the lights as close as 18 inches as long as its not too hot at the canopy, but Ive also heard that you shouldnt go any closer than 3-4 feet. Who is right? Can a 1000w HID cause light stress, or is more light always better as long as its not too hot?

10 inches if you have cooltube and cool temps.. still getting 11000 or more lumens of light at 2 feet not including reflected light.

Well if thats the case, my next question is what is light burn/stress, because you're pretty much saying more light=better.

Heat is one thing, light bleach is another, plant can get stressed by both, but even with a 1000W it will be hard to get it close enough for light bleach (never had the problem with my 600W but see it often with my LEDs) so I recon you can keep it as close as the heat allow you, use your hand at canopy level, keep it there for a few minutes, see if you can find a sweet spot where heat is`t a problem and is still have some distance so it can cover its 5x5 ft (I used to have my 600W at 18" and 12" after I got a cool hood on it)
