Hey, I thought this was shitty weed?

Okay, so maybe some of you have experienced this too. Anecdotally, we "know" cannabis has an increased potency effect when it has cured to it's particular happy spot.

Some strains seem to be pretty damn good shortly after harvest and dry enough to toke, while other strains when sampled about the same stage haven't hit their peak effect yet and even get set aside in the suspected "shitty weed" bin to be sampled again later.

Then, lo and behold (does anyone really ever say "lo and behold" in real life?) a couple months go by and you roll up a doobie of that shitty weed you were going to give to your infrequent toker brother-in-law for Christmas and it now it's kick ass.

Chemically, genetically or scientifically speaking why do some strains seem to be pretty damn good out of the gate and others need more time ? What occurs?

The high may change in time as in THC breaks down over time to CBN to give a stonier high where right after harvest it might have been a lot headier. Other compounds are also changing and that affects the high as well.

Not to mention that everyone feels something different from the same pot. Both psychologically and physically. I've mainly grown sativas as they really lift my mood and give me some energy but more than a couple small hits in my pipe and I can have an anxiety attack with heart palpitations and severe paranoia. A rookie would be freaking but I just ride it out and after 15 min or so feel great. Give the same pot to my stoner buddy and he'll Hoover back a fat joint and be rolling another one right after.

A lot of people say wait until there are lots of amber trichomes but there's no reason to tie up the grow room waiting when they continue to age and break down after harvest so do the waiting while they are curing in the jar. Want to speed up the break-down process then sit the jars in a sunny window or leave them in the grow room where the grow lights can shine on them.

Now that sanity is slowly returning about pot the secrets are rapidly being revealed.

Thanks for chiming in Old Med.

Yes, I've heard of the thc "aging" . I still remain curious though of why some strains of cannabis seems to be closer to their potential relatively early in the drying process, while others seem to need more time to age. (Malawi strains come to mind here)

Didn't know if the thc itself (or other factors, respective terpene profile maybe?) plays a role. For instance is all thc chemically the same ? I realize some cannabis plants have more thc than others, but is thc makeup identical chemically speaking from plant to plant ?

All thc in the plant (and other cannabanoids) must convert to a psychoactive form before it gets you high. The heat from the lighter does this. Cooking into food. Or just decarbing in the oven.

And....

Over time more of the conversion happens in the jar. Also I think the flowers get smoother and easier to smoke which allows more active cannabanoids to get into our system.

And I like the phrase "Lo and Behold". Sounds fancy. Lol.

When I used to hear that weed got more potent as it aged and especially if it got very dried out, I was sure it was total garbage. BUT I had some OK smoke I bought up in Tahoe and had it in my truck for 2 years and when I tried it again now that it had become dry as a turkey fart, I couldn't believe how potent it had become. I'm pretty sure from what I've read it has to do with THCA breaking down to THC as the bud dries and ages. If you don't believe it, try it sometime.

Since I had such a shitty year, I have more of my '16 full season and '17 spring crops left than I made this crop. I will get lots of chances to test that.

Weed stored in your truck could never stay fresh for 2 years.

Properly vacuumed sealed maybe. I think you smoked mold. The canabanoids start breaking down as the plant matter does. Likely 6 months then started getting old and worse.

Lot more than THC makes up the whole experience.

Take a strong sativa and strong indica at say 20% THC each. The THC molecule is the same in both yet The effects are way different. It's the terpenes and other cannabinoids having a major influence on not only the buzz but the medicinal effects. Whole plant extracts work better due to the entourage effect of all the parts making the whole. Things like shatter wax and even BHO are for kids and stoners. Smoking is a very inefficient way to get your medicine if that's what you use pot for like I do. Vaping not a lot better as a delivery vehicle. I was a kid and a stoner too for most of my pot using life but the last 15 years or so it's all about how it helps me function. Still have little hits in my pipe for quick relief but consume most of my pot in edible form. Mainly cocobudder.

I've been making my cocobudder with pot that has been slow dried and cured for sometimes a year or more. Recently I found a method on another forum that uses pot fresh off the plant to make edible oil extracts.

Do you realize the implications of this?! Way less trimming! happydance.gif

Besides that obvious big plus pretty much all the terpenes and other elements are trapped in the oil and available to the user instead of evaporating during the dry and cure or worse yet being baked away in the oven using that outmoded method to decarb the pot. Pot decarbs over time at room temp and I can eat a bud of some year old pot and get really buzzed so why cook the goodies out of it first.

Just Google, "Fresh Harvest Infused Cannabis Oil" and you should be able to find it easy enough. Lots more info about some interesting ways to enhance your health with diet and supplements to bolster your immune system and make pot work better to manage and cure disease too.

You missed the point, the weed wasn't 'fresh' by any stretch of the imagination. It was bone dry without a hint of mold. As I said, try it yourself and see what happens to cured weed left in a car for a couple of years, then post what you find. If you don't want to try it, then don't - but speculating about the results won't change anything.

I didn't miss the point. My point is 2 year old weed in your truck is stale and degraded and could never still have the original canabanoid content.

I would have looked under a microscope with what I know now before smoking. Well I wouldn't smoke it that old.

the weed stopped maturing a long time before you found it.

I am saying that it matures in potency for 3-6 months. Not after it is breaking down.
