Very good point uncle buck
I was just using it as an example and yes I had heard the farms having their water cut off used as a talking point on the news or radio and I am admittedly not that well studied on the subject as I usually try to make sure I am on issues I express my own thoughts on.
You raise a good point that without govt infistructure these communites would not have existed in the first place-
I see the different angles on this- interesting talking point although it's not my own and you raised a very valid counter point.
i was born and raised in the Central Valley and have been all around it. i have friends who are farmers and also friends who are here illegally. The wages are low because the farmers can't make any money on their crops.

damn.

i had to press like on one of your posts.

in any case, it is not as simple as hannity makes it out to be. first of all, as you acknowledged, the land would be barren if not for the enormous infrastructure projects undertaken by the big bad government.

secondly, the water shortages only effect the west part of the valley. other parts of the valley have an overabundance of water and sell it to some of the farms that got in line for the water too late.

third, most of these farms complaining about the water shortage are huge mega-corporations who exploit illegal labor for much of their production.

fourth, most of these farms get water anyway, but sell it to municipalities for a bigger profit than they would get farming the land.

finally, to turn on the water would lead to a collapse of the food chain and put fishermen up north out of business, as well as the industries that do business with them (the processors, the drivers, etc).

say we did turn on the water. next thing you would hear is hannity talking about how government is putting fishermen out of business. it's a great talking point for that reason.

in any case, shame on you for echoing that tired old canard, but props for acknowledging that you need to study up on the issue. i have driven through there many, many times and have gained an interest in the topic. it is not as simple an issue as the signs on the freeway would have you believe.

The farmers are forced to either sell their water or go broke. They can't get a decent price for their crops.

Collapse of the food chain?

That would be ok if the government would allow the market to pay them a decent price for their crops through trade, tax, and regulation changes.
They have pushed the little farms out and subsidized the corporate farms. Then they don't pay the workers shit. Thats why noone here will do it and there is lax border security.

VERY true regarding pushing the little guy out. MOST farmers i know are small, local ones. They are getting raped right now (and for at LEAST 15 years).
