Help :'(

400w HPS is great for flowering up to 4 plants 2 - 3' tall ( yes - more light better result ) BUT that's a lil plant and it sure looks like it wanted to grow great. Daylight bulb fluorescent (HO T5 great T8 about as good w/less power and heat).
I vegged under HPS and keeping the plant compact is hard - start them in fluorescent, maybe finish a few weeks of VEG w/HPS - I recommend U look online at AG related paper's and studies like from Universities and such. You are going to get overwhelmed with BAD information on mineral/amendments and watering HERE. Truthfully I get great result with historically known farming traditions like earthworm castings (U can make for free at home BTW, has beneficial nematodes & Calcium,Magnesium ect Basically several of the 4 groups of minerals U will ever need) and other natural amendments. Maybe you will learn from your mistakes the important thing is understanding what you did or not do to create a mistake.

Your dirt is too compact, i don't see any aeration, i bet that is drowning from lack of oxygen to the roots, get a better potting mix and reduce watering a bit. Also looks like heat stress, back your light off.

well, what are your night temperatures?
I like to keep the day-night temperature difference within 10 degrees of each other (but I use centigrade, not sure how much that is in F).
Also, 85°F is a tad hot. Is that measured at plant height?

Yes thats measured at canopy top and when i go to bed i got the heating on a timer to kick in after lights as its like -1c outside i have it on 65f
Yeah best thing you can do then is switch to night light like Bareback.
I've done it too for the same reasons in the past and was very happy I did!

Just let them run dark after lights out until the new on time (so they get one very long night).
Plants aren't bothered at all by the change either ;)

Is it ok to switch from hps to cfl in veg as ive been told hps isnt suitable for veg only flower or will this stress plant
some very bad advice . you can veg with any spectrum you want and switch them from 6500 or what a lot of us use today 7200k . and throw a 2700 k hps on top of the plant . there will NOT be any stress to the plants . as long as the time of day is steady 24/7 or 18 /6 no harm . this is done a lot with my friends . and a lot of people veg with hps with great results .

I have used hps from start to finish . It's not perfect but it works. The worst part for me was the stretch and the heat .

Yeah not good as long as there happy for now i had a few problems with temps too but i manage to stabalize but now they seem to be growing bushy not taller a little slow too

no not at all . the plants might have a little bit more stretch . no big deal . I will say plants grow a lot faster under a 7200 because in veg the plants like that added blue spectrum . . but some people swear by using hps in veg . lot of people use hps . so is it wrong to use them in veg . no . keep them rocking .
