Help with short path

for many years I’ve ran bho so I am no stranger to extracts but I’ll have to tell ya short path is way different . I was running into problems and I had a 5l flask boiling up with really no way to stop in the middle of things to take a second to think about what I was doing wrong . Unfortunately I’ve been issued the 5l China turnkey to work with from my ppl . B06C42A6-5B41-4A9A-B5B3-03750471F1F1.jpeg
I was not sure why the blu thing was included in the package I took it out and added a stage 2 vacume pump I had laying around 3AA4464B-0355-408D-B730-F31C6C3457B6.jpeg
Issues I had with the mantal was it would not stop raising the temperature after the set point and also the magnet is about the size of a Motrin 800 is that about the right size magnet for a 5l flask ?
Also I had oil building up in the chiller head part . I was running chiller at -20c . I had a vacuum leak from the thermometer port that seemed to be essential for any kind of oil being built up in system . Also I was running mantal at 230c . My last issue was that I had oil building up in the lines and in the cold trap . I shut it down and decided to ask for help because it seemed to be a fail . For reference I had about 750 ml of crude in 5l flask . Thanks for the help I need it lol

Someone was warning in another thread not to buy turn key setups. Guess they were correct.
One thing at a time, you have much to learn tbh but may as well start with the pump. Did they really sell you a aspirator for doing short path? That or your 2 stage are way underpowered for SPD .

Great this is a good start I hope I added enough info and details

Really hot ? I was not aware of that also what do you use in your chiller
Pretty hot. Like 20-40 degrees less than your mantle setting. I use freeze therm in my chillers which is clear ethelyn glycol. Do not use dyed antifreeze in your chiller.
Really I'd suggest putting this all off to the side for a while and start with the basics of chemistry like learning the principles of simple distillation and then fractional distillation but also learn the other cornerstones that make up the foundation of what you're trying to do. They are Extraction Distillation filtration/purification and crystallization. And also learn the basics of the labware equipment you have invested in because I think you are going to break a lot of stuff and get really frustrated quickly. I like to recommend reading zubrick. Its old and remedial and there are probably better things out there but it's cheap, easy to find, easy to follow along, has pictures, and hits all those points I mentioned from basic lab equipment to processes

I told ya in a dm, the water aspirator is used for rotovap and filtering, not spd. You must use a heater, not a chiller.

80c heater water/glycol set temp. Unless you do the hot condenser tek, but that's for experienced spd.

@gwpharms arr you calling me the wreck it Ralph of short paths ! Lol thanks for the back to basics input I do need to understand what it is I’m trying to achieve

@DemonTrich
You told me this , so this has nothing to do with spd just annoying that it was sold in the package like poop here ya go .

I appreciate both of your input immensely I’ll see even if this chiller can be used as a heater and also get this ethelyn glycol ordered ASAP ! Along with new vac pump . And while I’m waiting for that I’ll read up on zubric
Bayuuuummmm
8-)

Is what this guys preaching true are you supposed to use sand in mantel, dry ice under fractions and cold trap , ditch the cow and disconnect cold trap after solventss are fractions off

I guess you can if you want but you don't have to do any of that if you don't want to. I wouldn't use sand, hopefully you have a stirring mantle. Ice in the traps is a good idea so they work efficiently. May as well disconnect the trap when you can its just in the way I suppose. Preferably you would get the ethanol out in the rotovap and use your aspirator as a vacuum for that process. It'll lessen the chance of solvent vapor destroying your 3-$5000 vacuum pump you're going to need. You'll need a micron vacuum meter, and vacuum controller is good
All the questions you ask will answer itself when you learn more about distillations
