  • ok so i fucked up
long story short, i hooked up a carbon filter, cooltube and fan the other day. i had a small fan from wal mart that once in a while id put on and blow air in through the top of the tent. with that tiny fan going, the tent would blow up. i thought that wasd odd since the fan pulling air out was so much stronger. i saw plastic under the pre filter on the carbon filter.. thought that was odd and shouldnt be there.. i took it off.. the tent was now like a dried prune.. i looked at the other side of the tent where the fan taking our from the filter was and there was black carbon that spewed out.. not much at all, but noticable. i wasnt supposed to take that plastic off was i? or is the black stuff coming out normal? it stopped now but i dont think that was good.. really need some help please

Yes, without taking the plastic bag off, you wouldn't be able to pull air through it. There's always a bit of residual carbon dust that comes out of a new filter. If you're venting to somewhere you don't want this dust to go, can blow some of it off with computer duster before hooking it up. Ideally, you want a bit of negative pressure on your tent (more air going out than in) as this won't allow air to seep out of cracks and keep it all going through the filter. If the walls are sucking in too much and your temps can handle it, put a fan speed controller on it to slow it down just a bit. This will help with noise as well.

If there's carbon dust inside the cooltube, disconnect and clean your tube, then hook back up. Dirty glass/lenses in hoods will contribute to a good bit of lumen loss, thus reducing performance. Should be good to go after that.

No, it's not going to ignite. Carbon is a very clean, albeit black, thing. It absorbs chemicals and pollutants.

Thanks everyone! very paranoid about unhealthy things or possible fires with the grow. ive never used a carbon filter before so i dont know whats up with them but i figured it was common sense that plastic would act as a barrier but when i saw the dust i thought for sure i messed something up.

Its all good, just means two things from what I can tell, you put thought into what you do, and you could use a little research time on the specifics of stuff that concerns you.
