Plant was doing really well up until about 2 days ago when I notice slightly slowed growth (did a water change 2 days ago). I might have given a little too much nute, but only what was recommended by fox farm (maybe a little less). PH is about 6.3, was about 7 when I measured old water that I changed.

Roots looked perfect white before water change

I am using 2 8" bubble discs and an aquarium air pump. I had water level about 1" into the clay pellets, which I hear is wrong. I kept it up after the water change cause I think plant was doing so well (about 10 days after the seedling sprouted in these pics). After I noticed the growth slow down I freaked out, dumped 1/2 the water replaced with filtered tap and trimmed some of the worst roots off. The water level is not about 1" below the net pot.

Can you give me some advice?

Not sure if this is just cause the water level was too high or the nutes or bubbles aren't strong enough.

Growing in 5g bucket, 10" net pot, so the roots have been traveling down a lot I think.

Please help, this is my first grow and I really want it to work out.root.gifplant.gifbubbles.gifstem.gif

Thizz13, thank you for your reply. Don't you think that brown gunk on the roots is a problem or am I just being an over-reacting noob. Man I'd love to be an over reacting noob and there not be a major prob.

okay I think you are right, I just tested ph and it was 7.5!!! not sure how that happened cause I tested after I added nutes and it was like 5. added just a touch of epsom and baking soda and it went to 6.3, I thought that was ok but I mustn't have waited long enough and the ph must have gone up after I set it back up.

well I added about 2 tsp of white vinegar and it is at 5.95 now. Hopefully these huge ph swings won't kill it. Thanks for the tip on the PH, I bet you are right on the money there.
Best regards

Yep, plant looks healthy so far.
The stuff on the roots looks like hydroton dust that has gathered. Did you rinse it real good before using?
I wouldn't be too worried about it, looks like it's growin good.
Try not to trim the roots, when you do it has to replace them. That may be why the growth slowed.
Stay on top of the PH, it's the most important factor with hydro.
Keep it up, lookin good.

they looking gd mate keep it up, they will start goin nuts soon as those roots get a mass in the water:) i noticed u have red buckets,, have u wrapped mylar around the outside? as maybe the light is gettin in? if u in doubt then u can always get some hygrozyme or oxy plus h202, to readily combat any algae or slime, and will also super oxiginate the water

pwizzle, thanks for the advice and the encouragement. I won't worry so much anymore. But you are right, I am testing ph every day until I get a little better handle on this!

sweetsmoker, yeah I do have translucent buckets, I thought it would be okay cause they don't let a lot of light through, but I am going to put a few coats of white paint on them tonight. I thing you are right, I am starting to have an algae problem. I will also see if I can get some of those chems you mentioned.

Thanks to everyone, It's really great to have some many experienced and helpful people around when you are new to something :)
