no. you can switch straight to 12/12.
ps: Its impossible to tell. You will have to wait until it show sex.
Females = Long white hairs
Males = Pollen sacks or balls..

ive always just go 12/12 no dark period. but if you want to by all means.ive heard that it helps get flowering hormones flowing.never had prob with my method
