Hay ontop of soil

seached the web for 20min and couldn’t find an answer..

Outdoor desert grow where temps get in the 110F
So I’ll obviously need some type of material that can sit on top of the soil..

Plants are going directly in ground in 3x3 hole that’s been dug up and replaces with good soil,

I saw that some nor cal growers use hay or straw underneath there plant to protect the soil from direct sunlight?

So hay or straw?

I live in norcal where we get 105-110 in the summer. I don't use straw, I just time my drip system to water 2 times a day for those days. A full amount at sunset and small amount just before sunrise. It's worked great for me.
