Hey guys, maybe I havnt been making enough lately, or making large batches so im starting to forget my own tricks and secrets, but for the last few batches I havnt been able to get that rock hard shatter that I used to get.

wtf am I doing wrong??

120F in the vac for 1 hour, 6 hour, 12 hours, 24 hours, and by 2 days its starting to wax up. no shatter stage though.

suggestions? besides winterizing.

I usually keep temps under 115° when im going for shatter. Anytime ive gone above that its started waxing up

I've always been able to achieve shatter when my temps are around 110 at full vac.
But if your having real trouble getting it to wax up, maybe it's just the strain you've been workin with. I think some strains just produce more cutin and when you extract you will pickup more lipids, causing your extract to wax up when it's purged.

hmm interesting. ill have to try to drop the temps a little bit. I find at 110F its barely enough heat to keep the oil liquidized enough to allow the bubbling to keep going.

and im not going for wax... thats easy.. just let it sit.

its the shatter ive been having a hard time getting recently for some reason, ill try a lower temp.

I use an infrared thermometer and run 115f, max 117. Spread it thin, like 1/16". Flip the patty between vacuum cycles, pulling and releasing vacuum several times to massage those bubbles.

What kind of heat source do you have?
Also in my previous post I meant to say "if your having trouble keeping it from waxing up"

I use a griddle with a temp probe on it, its been very accurate..just me fiddling with the dial is what messed me. It seems that 110F doesnt keep it soft enough but im probably just being too impatient. ill def try it at a lower heat.

Perhaps consider investing in an induction cook top, these things transfer the heat more efficiently to your concentrate if it's spread out on a dish.
My cousin has one of those nuwave cook tops, it seems to hold temps better than my pancake griddle and it also has a digital display screen that shows the temp, so he doesn't need an IR thermometer like I do.

Homie, winterize your oil to remove plant fats, evap with open airflow,

The vac should be no more that 109 degrees, vac for 12 to 24 hours, depending on quantity, Continuously, no stopping, no flipping, no agitation,
Do not turn off the vac pump until no dark bubbles are apparent

I usually pull until the vacuum pump sound matches the sound it makes when its pulling against a closed ball valve.

why does stopping or flipping effect it?

I do like winterizing and have done it before a few times (one of the time not making shatter either)... but im not a fan of losing 10% of the weight as well as 90% of the taste.

I think my temps might just be a little too high, ill try 110F on the next batch. thanks guys!

ive had more consistent luck with snaps provolone method . just a bit of fliiping. let it warm up, then raise n release vac till bubbles stop rising. then flip. repeat.. GL

been at 113F for 16 hours now... kinda shattery but still a tad sticky. well see how 20-24 hours treats it.

I can't take credit, it's knowledge I gathered from the wealth of great minds I've picked on the matter. I've learned a ton about concentrates and lab testing equipment in the last 10 months due to my job.

Learning curve is greatly accelerated by being able to do lots of experimentation in our R&D labs without regards for profit. We often learn more from our mistakes. Being conservative in order to preserve profit potentials will inherently reduce the possibility of stumbling on new tech.
