i have a small grow in my garage. The power on the 15amp outlet is basically tapped out. However there is a unused 30amp outlet with the dryer shaped plug in. What is the simplest way to use this outlet for my regular plug in stuff like fans, flourescents, heat... do I need a controller?

electrical, help, bud, herb,
you won't need a controller but it would be the simplest way to use the circuit. Most likely that 30amp circuit is 240v. That means you will have to separate the load. The good news is that it will be 60amps at 120v. If you have no electrical experience the easiest way to do it would be to get a 120v light controller and use the wiring from the outlet to feed the controller. If you are somewhat handy you could probably do it yourself for $25 worth of stuff from Home Depot. Or you could get an electrician to do it for you in an hour for around $100.

If hes got the three prong then it was likely wired with 10-2 meaning no three wire (lacks neutral). No neutral no splitting it for 120v.

I bet the inspectors just love you...
smart enough to know the difference between code and practical applications. i don't worry about code when i'm building a grow room considering no one will ever see it. "code" also dictates what height my outlets and loadcenter must be at. i'm not worried about those things when building an illegal marijuana grow. the least of my worries is a electrical code inspection. most of the codes make sense and i actually go above and beyond them but common electrical knowledge will tell you not all of them have to be adhered to exactly.

good luck with that though. i'm sure if the cops show up at your house, while they are arresting you they'll say "look, the electrical is to code."

You need to be more specific in describing the 30 amps outlet. Google "NEMA receptacles configuration chart" and give us the NEMA number of your outlet. Sometimes the manufacturer will imprint the NEMA number on the face of the receptacle.

Again, thhn not in raceway is retarded. Your advice needs to be followed with a disclaimer if you don't adhere to code because your above all that. I don't worry about cops as I am legal medical. Thanks for your concern

actually i'm not concerned. i was being sarcastic. if you think that something bad is going to happen but not having his neutral in the same raceway as he's 2 hots then you clearly don't know what you are talking about so just leave it to the non anal retentive professionals. go back to reading your NEC code book.

Go back to grabbing images off the net and claiming your a licensed contractor. I see right through you as anyone in the trades will. I see work done by craigslist schmoes so much that it makes me sick to think of these poor homeowners being taken by unlicensed wannabe's. Fixing your mistakes is my job security. So keep up the bad work so guys like me can come fix it. :)

You both have some good points for sure but I wouldn't chance it when it comes to electrical. If by chance your house catches fire, insurance companies will find any excuse to not pay out. I see all kinds of gross code violations too. The most recent...neutral and hot reversed on a plug with no ground anywhere in site but the box was grounded. It's amazing at the stupid shit people do.

gross code violation to grow marijuana in your house but who's checking.
No, it actually isn't a code violation to have a grow room in a dwelling, and specifically, there's no electrical code in North America that explicitly states that it is a "gross code volation to grow marijuana in your house". In fact, no electrical codes states that even in looser terms whatsoever.

I can't personally say you're giving bad advice, but the advice you're giving is at minimum sketchy.

Everything should be done to minimum electrical code requirements in your area no matter what it's for or where one lives. In fact, I always advocate for above-code standards for contractors in not only electrical, but all trades..
