Halogen lamp and fire from heat?

I had a small vivarium with a broad spectrum sun glo basking lamp from exo Terra which helped grow my plants for my beardie dragon and since the viv is cracked I cannot use it and thought an airing cupboard would be OK for seedlings and germination if I put my peat/plastic pots on ceramic tiles so it covers the wood.

I do worry as the cupboard is a wooden structure and even thought I have surge protection in there I was worrying about it getting too hot and catching on fire! My exo Terra lamp will go up to about 25-30c without thermostat control and the bulb gets HOT.

Fire is your enemy, If you feel like its unsafe, change it. If the bulb your using is close to wood and heats up considerably I would be using CFL's instead, they are colder during use. Also, it would not be wise to grow inside a wooden box with no ventilation, get an exhaust fan and intake fan .

Halogens for growing? I thought they restricted the cellular growth and retarded budding?
Halogens have been taken off the market by MANY companies that used to use them in home lighting becaue of the heat they produce and the fires they've caused...

I agree-- change over to CL's or HPS!!

NEVER run a halogen in an enclosed space inside a dwelling....
I know insurance companies that even give discounts if you prove that none are in use at your home...because of fire hazard...
not worth the risk my friend... IMHO

HID lighting is a great route.... one ballast can give you capabilities of running both MH and HPS... around $200 for the base, ballast, enclosure, 2 bulbs, a timer and hangers....

Thanks for the heads up! I've since got a spiral cfl @ 2700k/1200lms/30w and the heat difference is loads cooler with the cfl and actually seems brighter. From what I've seen and read these CFL's seem to be OK around 1" away from seedlings in fiber/plastic pots.

Just need to grab another at 6500.

Oh, on the light box it says I cannot use it with a household timer, is there any reason for this and any way to automate daylight hours? I'm only using until the warmer months come around.
