Growing dank ass buds from seed to harvest has absolutely nothing to do with how much you spend
To get dank buds you do need to get some good genetics - not massively expensive, but a little does need to be spend - unless you have a kind benefactor.

Agree largely otherwise, you do not need expensive lights when the best light possible is totally free.

I reprocess my soil, spend a little on manures, but not much - Mr FF eat your heart out.

Make my own liquid Russian comfrey fert - also free. Don´t spend much on other ferts.

Use organic lime - crushed eggshells.

Good luck everyone.

Very nice work, what're you growing? That's a funky bud structure :)
looks like it might be pollinated...the bud will sometimes look like that...its putting its energy into seeds not bud...i could be wrong tho..just woke up and glanced at his pics

DSCN0560.JPGyou must be talking about the last pic. its a trainwreck that i was growing. i did what everyone said not to do. i took all the sun leaves off because the buds were growing together so tightly that there was NO light penetration at all. the plant stayed small. under 2 feet but produced over 1 1/2 ounces... now back to the topic of this thread. while i do agree that good equipment will produce good results, there is NO substitute for experience.... all the high dollar toys wouldn't have helped me with my first grow. i was an idiot. 3 grows later and i've replaced $$$ with knowledge. now i can grow plants that produce ounces instead of grams. and i don't spend huge dollars. this years grow has cost me about $50-60 and i should get about a pound.

Thank you for that people think you need to spend 500+ to get a good grow.Under that you will have a half ass grow that would get you nowhere.I see im not the only person who does not feel that way...

Ok so we all remember back when we were just starting to grow. We were looking for a fairly easy way to grow some plants for little money. I learned very quickly that if you don't invest a little money you aren't going to get anything in return. I have come to find out that there are endless amounts of new growers with this age of medical marijuana.
The things i always hear are, where can i get cheap lights, where can i get cheap soil, how can i do this as cheap as possible. Well the answer is that you need to not half ass everything or you will waste the measly 20 bux you put into you ghetto ass grow. It is important to remember that when it comes to horticulture more $ = better quality.
So as to put an end to this phenomenon i would like you all to save up 500$ before you even attempt to grow a plant. The first thing you will need is some stable genetics. This is easily procured by going to your local club and picking up some clones, they range from 5 dollars or if you go to the wrong place you may end up spending 20 per clone. You also have the option of purchasing some seeds online all though i do not think this is the best option because there is the possibility of customs taking your items ( if you live in the states ), also you never really know with breeders packs if you are getting what you pay for genetics wise. The other issue i have with this is that some of the strains have been stored in a less than optimal environment and half the seeds i have purchased have been unable to germinate due to no fault of my own.
The second thing you need is a space to grow your plant, if you are some 16 year old with the bright idea that you are going to grow a plant in a cardboard box, i have news for you, you are wasting your time. Your growing environment must be clean and have enough room to finnish the flowering process.
Third the thing i see most often is people not wanting to pay big bux for soil. If you are planning on hydro this paragraph isn't for you. If you want to go down to walmart and buy a 3 dollar bag of MG and burn you plants because its 20-25-20 be my guest. You need to buy yourself a quality soil such as fox farm or any other organic 20-10-10 soil like humboldt flower products. There is always the option and it is the best option to mix your own soil but unless you truly know what you are doing i do not think it is the best option for you.
The last subject i would like to touch on is lighting. If you are planning on just growing outdoors this paragraph does not pertain to you. There are so many different options for lighting these days it is often hard to make a solid decision. First i would like to say that cfl's WILL WORK butt it would be my last choice if you are serious about growing, so we aren't even going to discuss cfl's because im not a total looser. HID lighting is your best option you will get high yields with resinous buds. You can buy a post 2000 hps ballast and it will work with MH bulbs as well. If you are looking for a perpetual harvest i would buy one 1000w hps ballast reflector and bulb and use this for your flowering room to start you off. I would than use some t5's for my veg room. Now i would like to take a second to talk about led lighting , ITS CRAP if you want to pay 1000 dollars for a light that is only good for something that won't give you the results of a 250 1000w you can do so but you are an idiot. LED lighting wont be around for more than another 5 years because it is impractical and growers don't mind having to deal with cooling and electric bills because HID is cheap and produces the results we are looking for. LED fuck off and die.
So it has come to the end and i am not going to look back though to look for typos. I hope you enjoyed the read, but most importantly i hope this will put a stop to all the little walmart grows that people keep wasting time on. Have a great today and tomorrow, DNK:joint:
Kudos for speaking on this. Though you could have shined up your rant a little, I agree with the main idea. You invest cheap, you grow cheap.

Seems to each their own then. I personally think that if the grower invests in reliable equipment, the equiptment he needs, sets the cabinet up properly, then they have a lower risk of running into issues such as light leaks, faulty timers, etc that might occur if he'd fgone into it half arsed. It has nothing to do with what can be grown for what budget, but minimizing possible issue in the first place.

Give a guy a nice new car with a smooth gearbox and a nice clutch, he'll learn to drive quite nicely, give him a citroen 2cv that'll kangaroo left right and center, he'll pick it up, but he'll stall a lot more in the process. (i'm stoned, the analogy may not quite fit haha)

check this though. i had a ghetto ass grow for my inside plant. i only had like 80 watts of light on it,(fluro's) and i didnt go ALL out on all the nutes. but it turned out to be some of the better bud i've smoked in some time, i was very...very supprised how good it was. only thing is...it produced mearly a quarter.

I think the OP was talking about indoor grows. I'm growing outside too and I maybe spent $50 on everything. My indoor costs a good bit more. About $90 just for the power.

i think that every1 starts somewhere, an u definately DONT have to be spending $500 to start, im in the uk , just startd out, spent 60 quid on a 400hps an so far im ok, had a problem with last arjans plant , i think down to human error, an plan to learn from my mistakes with my 5 others 2 weeks into flower,

to all long time growers who know there shit, i take my hat off to u all, we new growers reap from ur wisdom, but to think that we're all kids is disrespectfull in my eye

The finer points of growing are best illustrated through personal trial and error. for example you can read all you want about how hps is better than cfl but you will never have a true sense of what that means until you try them both yourself. the same with comparing nute lines, strains, mediums, light cycles, etc. it's the trial and error and a keen eye that makes someone a skilled grower, not always the toys. ph pens are nice, but can you use the drops instead? of course. on the other hand, is there a difference between cfl and hid? of course. a shitty carpenter blames his tools. a good carpenter knows what tool is best for the job. but ANY carpenter who can't build a shed using just a hammer and nails probably wasn't much of a carpenter to begin with.

Somebody has a big ego... For one LED's are going to take over. Plus why discourage anybody from growing. We are all in this together. Who cares if its a shitty $20 set up under a CFL. It's still one more person overgrowing the government. Yes all the stupid questions get annoying, but you can just ignore them.. Yes because everyone has $500 to put into a grow... Maybe its some kid, who is scared of going to a dealer, or doesn't know anybody in the first place? Are they not suppose to enjoy the beauty of this plant. It's getting tiring hearing everyone says you need the BEST of everything. Yes the best stuff is better quality, and better bud, BUT remember its a plant after all that grew in the ground before all these fancy nutes/HIDS/.

I personally spent over $500 on my whole setup but I am constantly AMAZED at some of the results that people get on RIU from ghetto ass grows!
