whats the deal with gypsum, i want to use it there is no clear advice on how much to add to soil. basically since ive ran out of my soil i had been using for 3 years(it went bad so i tossed it) i have just taking to buying stuff like promix, ya know peat, perlite and dol. lime is pretty much all they are(tossing oit this shit when im done with it). but i have all the stuff to make my own promix, peat dol lim, perlit, verm, sand gypsum more random shit any ways im thinking i should replace 1/3 of the dol lime i would normally use with gypsum, any body got any thoughts?

Maybe this will help you: http://ohioline.osu.edu/anr-fact/0020.html

Main point is that gypsum has benefits (esp. outdoors) but does not influence [raise] soil pH, it isn't a liming agent like dolomite. Sphagnum is usually quite acidic and requires an adequate liming to ensure proper and stable pH.

20% calcium and a good chunk of sulfur, sulfur increases aromas and favors in fruits veggies n herbs, I've used gypsum at 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup per cuF in my recycled soil, depending on what else is added I.e. limestone sulpomag etc, just one application every year or two, or so....

I use gypsum in addition to dolomite, not in place of it. The dolo is added @1cup/cf, the gypsum @1/2 to 1cup/cf depending on what the mix is for.

I grow garlic in fresh mix to 'season' and inoculate it This gets 1 cup of gypsum/cf. The sulfur really bumps the garlic flavor up. Re-amended mix for mj gets 1/2 cup+.

I seem to have better results with used re-amended mix with my mj than fresh never used mix. Even after a good cooking period. Just my own observation

where you been wet?

anyways thanks for the input ill put it to good use that pretty much waht ive been hearing is not in place of dol but a small amt added it better your ratios seem to be about the same as what most every one has told me i plant on using the normal amt of lime per CF and 1/3 a cup of gypsum per CF.

i too had best result with re amended soil, but i think this plays more into the microbe bacteria
and fungi things going on inside. but ever since my last soil got out of hand im not sure if im gonna continue reusing soil, perhaps i will cycle my soil a few times but anymore i think it will just be easier to make fresh.

hey and while you around you know anything about yucca extract? or anything that works ike that?(it helps with water retention.)

In the True Living Organics book, the author recommends half a cup and a normal amount of dolomite for about 1 cf. I am trying this mix now, so far so good, but I omitted the gypsum due to no supply.

Check out landscape supplys along with feed stores. I found it in a feed store. Had Soil Repair on the bag and was ~$14 or a 40lb bag.

No one else had had it, then I saw it at HD this past spring. They didn't have it before.

@POLY Family emergency with no access for way longer than I counted on and my garden(s) didn't get taken care of like I hoped. Trying to get things going again.

My reused mix is good for ~3 years till the peat breaks down to mush and it goes on the garden. I've messed up re amends though. LOL Usually can be fixed, but a bit of a pain.

Yucca extract is good stuff if you can source it cheaply. Regular old Ivory works well for me about 90% of the time @~$3.50 for a big bottle. I do have a very ($8+ IIRC/8oz bottle), expensive bottle of yucca extract. It seldom gets used and won't be replaced when it runs out. Not at that price point anyway. ..... YMMV

Ive been trying to figure out the gypsum thing for a while. It says it releases calcium 150 times faster than lime or oyster shell. I swear i read the rev say that if using RO water you must use gypsum but havent come across it again so it may be a false memory. I read another place that instead of just using dolomite lime to use a mix of dolomite, crushed oyster shell, and gypsum I used something like 1 tbs dolomite, 2 tsp CO, and 1 tsp gypsum seemed to work petty well. I also used a little epsom salt to replace the lost magnesium from using just dolomite.

Id like to use it but and not sure how much is too much. I have used it in bulk mushroom substrates very often in the past and they love it so it seems to be myco friendly
