Growing with rockwool

Like if I veg in a 6inch cube and the roots start to show if I put that cube on a 8inch rockwool slab will that be enough room for the roots to grow a average sized tree?

I'm not the person to ask, really. I'm trying to learn a whole lot here. Read that thread. It's full of information and worth the time. I'm still not done with it, and I started last night. And that's why I'm posting here again--apparently the OP there switched to a different growing medium at some point. Still, though, for quite some time (like years) he was using rock wool at the growing medium.

You mentioned vegging. He does not veg. Then again, he's going a sea of green (SOG), so the goal is not growing an average sized "tree," as you wrote. The goal of SOG is to grow smaller plants, more quickly, more efficiently.

I highly recommend you check out that thread. Other than suggesting that, I really can't help you, as I am too new to all of this. I can, however, answer your original question, though it's not from personal experience: yes, it's possible to do the whole grow in rock wool.

Check that thread out. It's well worth your time. You will be amazed at how much information is there.

Growing in just rockwool is ok' but you'll have to cover the rockwool with something to keep mold from forming.
That's why I think it's much easier just to start with rockwool starter cubes, then insert them into 4 inch cubes, then put them in pots with some type of medium like hydroton or diatomite.

To each his own....... whatever you find easiest for you.

OK how many inches deep should the pots be and do you put the hydroton in first then put the rockwool on top and then put more hydroton on top?

Whats the point of putting a starter cube of rockwool into a 4 inch cube, then into a pot with hydroton? Why not just put the starter cube into a pot with hydroton?

Ok if I put the starter cube in a pot of hydroton how much hydroton do I put in the pot and how deep does the pot have to be to grow a 4-5ft plant?

You could put the starter cube into a pot of hydroton. But I think it would be better to put into a 3 or a 4 inch cube before putting it into the pot of hydroton. Putting the starter cube into a 3-4 inch cube gives the plant a better foundation.
If the plant has a good foundation to grow from, the plant won't tip or lean when it's get's bigger.

For a plant 4-5 feet in height your probably want to go with a fairly good sized pot, 2 quart capacity filled halfway with hydroton balls, then the rockwool cube and then more hydroton. Its completely and totally possible to grow only using rockwool cubes too. The bigger the plant the bigger the cube you need.
