Growing Under White LED, Anyone Else Doing This?

A little up date...

I removed the bag seed plant as it was taking up space for an unknown...
On careful inspection the plant was a male, very glad I got it early...

I also changed the positions of the light bulbs from:

W W/DR W


W/DR FR W/DR


W W/DR W

To:

W/DR W W/DR


W FR W


W/DR W W/DR

W- 5000K Flood
W/DR - GreenpowerLED White/Deep Red
FR- Far Red not being used.

Decided did not want spots directly on plant tops and now shines between plants, plants are in corners.

I'll see if in the future if I can find a better means of getting some different light spectrums

I'll be the first to admit my technique is poor...
I've always pretty much thrown it in the box and gotten results.
Learning under LED I've got to change some old ways...

Sorry if i missed something earlier in thread but aren't you concerned about height control in flower for the guy on the right?

Can he just snap that tall one so it's horizontal?

i'm hardly getting any stretch with my leds. they are really tight and compact. i use the xml warm whites+red leds to achieve this

The stretch was caused by my over usage of Far Red (~725 - 750). I am currently no longer using Far Red. In the future I plan to experiment with end of day treatments but this means a re-wire.

I am a little concerned over height of the plants but am very happy with the performance of lamps bought at home depot. I wasn't ultimately sure how well they would do.

I am also really pleased with the greenpowerLED lamps as supplements to the white floods.

IMO, I am thinking I need to better diffuse the light from the white floods, they are very intense...

I think your WWs will be giving out a little FR (not a bad thing, but probably enough without supplement)

I made a mistake with the FR lamp...

In further study, as I understand it, Far Red is used to manipulate plants with end of day treatments and night interruption to get some result.
I as understand it, it is a very specific science and varies plant to plant...

I agree all white LEDs give off a very little FR and that is not bad...

Theres a really nice thread around on RIU somewhere of a guy who uses a far red "pontoon" that he DIY'd, on an OUTDOOR plant to manipulate the day/night cycle. Really interesting but i cant find it.

how much did your leds cost you in total? i'm planning on doing some more experiments in growing with leds. i won't disclose my plan yet

Sorry folks, but you shouldn't make blanket statements about White LEDs since they're not all made the same.

FranJan, you are technically correct and does not really matter unless your going to do a EOD light treatment. Splifferous is working on that...

The change of the white floods is seeming to be a good thing. I need to find a frosted glass diffuser, the 5000k floods are very intense.

I'm considering making a rewire so I can ramp up and down the lighting when lights go on and off. Any thoughts?

when the sun pops out from behind a tree the plants get no ramp up....I don't believe it's needed...JMO though.
I'm getting great response from my girls with the white LED spots...and a street light too!(LED)

Hey ALTG, I guess I'm also gonna be technically correct when I tell you FR isn't just for EOD manipulation . It's use in Veg is huge since it will spur root growth, though you should have blue heavy lights to help counteract stretching. My 2 main panels have a good percentage of FR (730-740nm) diodes which I think really helps with finishing plants, or at least that's my observation since I added FR to my BS240 grows.

But whatever, I didn't come to start a fight, it's just sometimes you see something on this forum and you just want to make sure people don't make the same mistakes you did. Especially when it comes to LEDs, the cruelest way to grow . And why are you diffusing your blue? Seems to me you'd be better off tying the bigger plant down a bit than killing your output. But that's just me.
