I have used Hydroton clay pebbles and I have to say that they're hard to beat. Lately I have been using a combination of grow stones and polyester batting from the fabric store. After starting the seedlings or clones in Rapid Rooter plugs, I line a net pot with the batting and pack the rest of the pot with growstones so that the entire rooted plug is surrounded by the growstones. The growstones are very porous and the batting holds water well. This combination has been working well for the last several crops.

Why use anything? I use net pots and collars only for years now, it was a happy day when i tossed the hydroton in the garbage. Lots of benefits including cost, cleaning, contamination control and others.

Agreed. I always thought that was the whole point with DWC, that water is the substrate. And keeping the clay clean is a pain in the ass of note. Personally switching to Coco Coir as it's easily disposable and comes in sterile blocks, don't do DWC except for my mommies the rest is flood-and-drain so my opinion doesn't really matter here.

You guys do a show, ebb-and-flow style, using coco peat or coir before?... Looking for the possible pitfalls before I go for it, so far nobody has had anything to say bad or good....
