No need to purge - as soon as it's collected off the parchment, it's ready to dab.

I bought the Dake off eBay, and the DabPress plates off Amazon - Dabpress is quickly becoming the DIY choice for most folks getting into this from what I've read. I went with the Dake instead of a HF press solely due to their warranty. Actually had to use it just a couple months after purchase. The return spring inside the piston broke and my press wouldn't retract after releasing pressure. One call to Dake CS Monday morning, and a new piston was on it's way to me at no charge. It's made in China just like the HF press, just better after sale support in my book.

Returns are strain and grower ability dependent of course. I've been getting low to mid 20's returns on some GG#4 I cropped last fall. Some sativa dom plants will return 10% or less - it's all in what's on the plant before it goes between the plates.

@Stubbie just curious do you have a pressure gauge on your press? If so could you share what kind of PSI you have been working with. Just not finding much info on PSI ratings for pressing. My plate size is 3x5 and will be pressing mostly flower.

Yes sir, that's another reason I was happy I went with the Dake. Lately, I've been stuffing 14g flower into a bag and pre-pressing into a rectangle that is apx 2"x4" - Place that on the parchment (I use Kirkland) and press between 190-210F I let the press just slightly squish the bag (right around 1-1.5 Ton on the gauge) for 30 seconds, then start ramping up the pressure. I find it starts flowing pretty well around 3 and I stop around 4.5 for a total of 2 minutes. Any higher, and I get blowouts in the bags.

When pressing smaller amounts of flower, I pre-press in the middle of a scotch tape roll and press those bagless. They can take slightly higher pressure, but not much more than 5-5.5 My plates are 3x7, so slightly different than your setup, but I would think the numbers would be similar.

That last shot is enough to take your breath away. Will any of the lower buds be counted in the dry weight.

I will just ask you here @greenthumb said he didn't mind. Does your gauge show PSI readings ? I guess what i am asking is are you saying that 1 ton is 2000 PSI? They are two different measures is why i am confused.

Here's a picture of my gauge to hopefully clear up the numbers I was posting above.

Yes it clears it up. My gauge shows basically the same thing except mine is saying PSI and your is saying TON. I believe that they are two separate measurements. I am sure i would be safe working within your numbers because my plate size is 6 sq inches smaller than yours.
what's the cheapest way to get a press? I'm looking for quality but without breaking my bank!
Walmart (hair straightener)

Quality can be had for less than $50 if you want to just play with a hair straightener that can be set low and a hand clamp. I figure I'm about $700 all in on mine. So many options man, just stay away from the cheap Chinese T-shirt style press that are trying to jump on the rosin game.

What's your budget?

Seems like a lot of people are buying the harbor fright press. They talking about the cheap presses are contorting and stuff. I have not found in my research so far why they need that kind of pressure to work. Most don't have gauges. Got mine from a outfit out of Denver Low-temp plates

Man, that is REAL nice! Mine takes up a bunch of space in my garage bench, and weighs a ton. I knew about Low-temp, they are just up the road from me here, but didn't know about this product. Dig it!

That BVA pump is world class hydraulics. That is a 20 ton pump. I was looking at different units when i stumbled on to this company. A little pricey but a very simple well made set up. I was shocked how much that little cage weights very heavy for its size.

Dabpress has a nice looking one for about $500, which I think you have to buy a $60 hand pump to complete it. They might have a cheaper bottle jack version as well.
I was seriously looking at that unit from dabpress. They do not sell that strongway hand pump and i could not find it anywhere. Every supplier i tried was out of stock.Plus the reveiws where not that great on the strongway pump. Without that pump there is no psi gauge. They also make one for 399.00 that has 3x3 plates. I would trust the bottle jacks more than i would trust any of those knockoff pumps. Most of the knockoff hand pumps are in the 200 dollar range and i would not trust any of them. The BVA pump is expensive(700.00) but has a lifetime guarantee. Low-temp also has a lifetime guarantee. I would hate the thought of paying shipping on the low-temp plates. The cage most weight close to 50 lbs.

The following information is from low-temp plates. Which i just received. Second, you calculate the surface area of the puck you are pressing. For this example, we will say it's a 2x4 puck, which is 8 sq in.
.
.
Finally, you take your total force and divide it by the surface area of the puck! 20,000/8= 2,500 platen psi.
