As far as cooler selection. If you can get one with a screw on drain plug on the outside it will work better.
The Coleman coolers have the snap on drain plug.
As long as you make sure it is sealed up good then you will have no problems.

Appreciate it man, got some new air stones and currently looking for the "right" cooler, one I'm comfortable with. There's nothing wrong with Bud Mass :eyesmoke:
Sams club has the big ones Flo and Boomer use for like 68 bucks. i saw them last weekend there. i use the 5 gallon sport coolers. They sell them at Lowe's ( blue ) or Home Depot ( Orange ).. You want to get a Igloo brand they have threaded drains versus colemans non threaded.

That's a really good idea, there's so many possibilities and designs its crazy :-) that drain will make water changes less of a hassle. Will keep in mind when designing cooler

Where I live we have "BJ's" its pretty much Sams club, just a different name. I went and they had HUGE coolers and small coolers, they were either too big or too small, the rest were all awkward shaped. My quest for the "right" cooler is harder than I thought. I don't want to settle for a white foam cooler, so I decide to build my own  I actually work at a Fiberglass Shop constructing aquaculture tanks/aquariums. Ill build a custom box and foam around it for insulation, we make coolers all the time, there just HUGE for raising fish.
+REP for all the help!

Thank you guys for "sparking" ideas!! GOOD STUFF! bongsmilie

Thnx alot dude

I too have heard/been informed that coolers are the way to go, took all my measurements and have plans sketched out for the fiberglass cooler  This baby is going to be an original. This is a DIY that takes days to finish, I have to build a plug first out of my measurements, then glass it and make the mold, THEN I can paint and glass the final project. And of course I'm not mentioning the finalizing (sanding, trimming, etc..) well worth the work tho.
What R you doing to your room? lol minor turns into major.

You will have to take some pictures of this build.
Is it gonna be insulated? Thats the main reason we use coolers to grow in.
This should be interesting to see. Props to ya for being creative!

Will do my best taking pics :eyesmoke: And yes sir, it is insulated, there's a layers of insulation foam added into one of the layers when glassing. (Will try to take pics) Adding water level gauge, drain valve, etc.. love glass  can build anything.

Thx for the interest man! Good motivation Keep Stoney Faced bongsmilie

everything i have heard about the water bottle in the res said not to use a frozen bottle but to use a bottle that had been in the fridge for a day or so

Sup man

I would think a bottle left in the fridge only will just reach room/reservoir temp in no time. But frozen kills roots, so like everyone says, cooler :eyesmoke: Have you tried this fridge only method?

If you put frozen bottles in there with a gap beneath the net pot then if the frozen bottle sits next to the roots. It could damage them badly.
And it's not just the frozen bottle. It's any bottle. If you stick a bottle in there and it bounces up and down and round and round.
Then it bounces up and damages and breaks the roots as well. I don't have issues since using a cooler to grow in.
I add a chunk of ice and seclude it to one corner of the rez so it doesnt touch the roots and it cools it significantly.
It will raise your water level a little bit so make sure you need to add water anyways.
If my temp gets up to 72 which is not often. I will either add cold water or chuck of ice and lower it back to around 68.

i use fridge water mixed with water left out to keep my water for feeding my plants around 60 or 65 degree and I have a 3 days old sprout that is around 3 inches tall

That would work too. Have a gallon of cold water in the fridge and pour it in the rez and it would really cool it down too. Not sure I would mix nutes in it tho.

Nice man :) There's just a rewarding feeling knowing you built something yourself. I wish I had a whole room for a grow, one day :eyesmoke:
Will keep an eye out for those pics. This is indeed exciting, my growing amigo bongsmilie

Update 3 :eyesmoke:

Whats good fellow grower's! It's been a week since my last update, and ive been keeping my babies as healthy and happy as possible.

- I have added a D.I.Y scrog to the lid of the reservoir
- Added new airstone(s) and bigger air pump
- Water changed and started Bloom cycle nute feedings

The girls drink ALLOT of water compared to nute uptake, and I have to top off every other day if not daily now. :leaf: Just means they have a healthy appetite.
I came home one day and found that a light bulb fell on the BIG BANG and broke off a whole branch!! I was pissed! :cuss: I trimmed the plant up, and instead of throwing the branch away, I dipped it in rooting hormone and planted in some rock wool, will see what happens. The Exodus Cheese is doing her thing as well, growing a little everyday.

I'm still working on that fiberglass cooler, have to work on it while I have free time, usually my lunch break for an hour. Since there isn't much time left on the auto's, I decided to just leave them in the current container and use the cooler for my next batch of seeds I just received (Dutch Passion - Frisian Dew and Barney's Farm - Pineapple Chunk) :eyesmoke:
If anything, I'll make the cooler larger to hold several girls instead of two. Cant wait!

Well enough reading, here are some pics of the ladies :hump: Comments always welcome!

Looks nice and healthy! Couple things tho.
No need for a top feed once the roots are in the water.
One plant would easily fill out that size screen and there are two in there.
I'd prob have a screen big enough to cover both of those Rubbermaids and let the ladies fill it in.
I do like that you can take the lid off and the screen and plants come off with it

Thx for stopping by blu, yeah I know top feeding is not nessery, but I figured I'd keep the stakes in there for shi*'s and giggles, doesn't hurt the ladies plus aerates the water a little :) but, yes, kinda pointless.
lol your right about the screen, very small, I couldn't think of a way to lift the lid without it being a hassle, so I stuck with the little screen attached to the lid. I tried making one big ebough for both containers, but it would have been a pain in the ass changing water. But since there autos I dont really worry about perfection, when my BIG ladies grow, everything has to be perfect :eyesmoke:
Appreciate your info. and help, stay stoney faced! bongsmilie
