grease in pond pump? wtf!?

I have 6 400gph pond pumps I'm using to build a couple systems. The first one i used left a oily film in the water while i was doing test runs. I tried a different one and it was fine, yesterday i went to use another one and it left the oily film. I ended up popping the cover off the back, where the cord goes in, and there was a thin layer of white grease in there all over the plastic cover and inside the housing, but it wasn't actually lubing anything. I'm guessing it's some type of sealing grease for the elec. coils in the motor that is just residue from manufacturing. I've seen it used in other similar applications. Anyone else ever notice this? I cleaned it out the best i could. I'm wondering if that grease caused some of my early issues that i thought was deficiencies.
