I was injured on the job almost 6 years ago. Got two herniated discs (dessicated means the fluid inside the disc is gone, and it sounds PAINFUL), not to mention a good deal of calcification. Don't you have to do a lot of twisting when you kayak? I do SO love the water, though... 8)
that is crazy shit. i am obsessed with sharks but scared to death of them. i have studied them since i was young. never used to worry bout them til i was in florida a few years back and people kept getting their legs bit off. also an older gent was swimming in a canal in his backyard and got eaten by a bullshark.

Bull sharks are #1 on pretty much every list of the deadliest sharks. It's also thought that many attacks attributed to great whites were in fact bull sharks. Bulls are mean mother fuckers.... very aggressive.... and known to be "the trash can of the sea" because they will eat ANYTHING!

Worst part about bull sharks..... they live in both Salt AND Fresh water. Bulls have attacked and killed people in Rivers.... that's right... they can swim right up that fresh water river... and they do!

Bulls are also known to hang out close to shore. This is why so many people in FL get attacked.... we have sand bars here that are pretty far out.... so people walk way out there on them.... and that's where the Bulls hang out trying to corral schools of fish into the sand bar.

When it comes to sharks.... I prefer to face them underwater with my scuba gear on then above water flailing around like a "dinner seal". If you ever have to do battle with a shark.... go for the EYES and the GILLS ;)

i gotta agree with you bout the bullsharks being aggressive. but i believe the trashcan of the sea is the tiger shark.. like you said bull and tiger sharks will eat anything at times.:spew:and the freshwater thing is what scared me about the bullsharks. the old guy got eaten on his daily swim in the freshwater canal behind his house. and then when i was in florida when everyone got bit, helecopters were taping swarms of like hundreds of sharks feeding on baitfish right next to the beach....scary shit. thanks for the advice haha, i hope i never get face to face with one. although it is not likely i will ever get bit i just have a little paranoia in the back of mind at the beach. i also have the utmost respect and fascination with them so that is why i think of them sometimes. haha yeah i am a shark nerd.

I missed this, I've been too busy kicking my own ass for killing a bunch of my plants.

Here's the thing, I, too, used to be almost deathly afraid of sharks. And I am still afraid to get into water (especially deep water) when I can't see what's around me, yet I scuba dive. And one reason why I scuba is to conquer my fear. It's why I ride my bike (and why I hurt myself riding other people's bikes this weekend, the kickstart Yami SR500 fucking KILLED me... but, I did get it started. ONCE ). It's why I MADE myself learn how to light firecrackers. In any event, I try to learn about what I fear, and I have tried to learn as much as I could about sharks. Most of them are great big pussies. But those bull and tiger sharks, watch the fuck out, man, watch the fuck OUT!

(of course, I wouldn't want to end up in the drink between, say, Catalina Island and San Pedro, those blues, as pretty as they are, are also known to taste us once in a while as well.)

I am the Seamaiden, Pisces, piscine, fishy fish-woman fish-thing. :D (If you knew my first name you would TOTALLY get it, and say, "Damn... God does kinda have a sense of humor, doesn't he?)

I've studied sharks, mostly the Great White's since I was 6... got hundreds of drawings I've made over the years, not sure why I never became a marine biologist, though there's still time to. I too was scared shitless of them at one time but just as Seamaiden said most sharks are big pussies (except Tiger's and Bulls, freakin' pigs they are!) and wouldn't hurt you at all. I'm looking forward to going on a diving trip next summer (gotta plan early) to South Africa with my father, we both love scuba as well and I'll finally get to swim with the Great Whites... Seamaiden have you heard anything personally about the SharkShield?

Hey, I have a friend in S.A. (a cop  NO, I'm not kidding). :D

I haven't focused on any one thing that closely ever, so there's nothing I've studied since I was 6, except maybe people and my toes. But, once I saw Jaws, I had to overcome my fear, I couldn't even swim in a pool it was so bad (and I know I wasn't the only one). Then, once I got into miniature reefkeeping and just general aquatics, I decided I wanted to collect my own specimens. Gotta scuba to do that. So, I learned, in SoCal via the North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (wish we had ROP up here), they had a class to teach you how to become a scuba instructor. I was already hooked on the other stuff, though, so what I learned about sharks was more of the "along the way to the Coliseum I learned this _____________________________" type of thing.

By the way, DON'T become a marine bio. There are papers written on the vast myriad reasons why, and one of the biggies is market saturation. There are other areas of study that can net a return and still offer you the same type of working conditions and variability (that's what always gets me).

hey guys i agree with you both. i have also studied sharks since a young age and always said i was gonna be a marine biologist. a penchant for late night booze and not attending class took care of that. but anyways haha, i do have a fear and fascination for sharks but i do not have a phobia. i have never been scuba diving but i have been snorkeling in sharks cove in hawaii and i love to go to the beach. it is always in the back of my mind that i am a stranger in someone else's habitat when i am in the ocean. mostly the beaches on the east coast i go to rarely if never have had attacks. i was raised in the jaws era and that influenced me too like others. i love and know much about sharks but i would hate to be on a boat in the middle of the ocean that sank. i am one of the first into the water at the beach but i have a lot of respect for these mighty creatures. the only time i worried about it when i was down in florida at my parents and like 7 people got severely bitten that summer. glad the gulf was clear so i could see all around me lol. thank you for your guys and gals input and i am glad you like sharks and other creatures like i do. and goatamine i am sorry for jacking your thread homie.

I caught that video earlier this week! Fucking dog.

Did you also watch the one where a shark attacks a dog? It comes with all sorts of warnings. I laughed at the end, you might get a kick out of it, too.
I saw the video listed but the warnings kept me away,i hate to see dogs get hurt so i chickened out

It's funny, it's just difficult to keep reminding myself that it's a fucking LIGHT SWITCH, and not some dude's lily white pecker stickin' out there.

I decided to grab my balls and watch it. Diver, Hawai'i, dog in water, white-tip reef shark, it couldn't be good. So I watched this whole thing, they're building it up, damn, the dog's cute! Oh no! Dog's 'fetching' a marker buoy, that's when it's gonna happen, I'm sure of it. Damn, the shark looks a little pissed (why isn't it hitting the diver?), but a white-tip attacking a dog at the surface..? Doesn't make sense, this is Hawai'i, gotta be a bull or tiger that's gonna nail the dog.

Then Rage Against the Machine comes on, and they stick a big ol' Ron Paul banner in our faces. Have some things to say (should have checked their spelling), and there it goes. Dog had fun, diver had fun, shark had fun, nobody died, but they did stick RP in there. I know how you feel about RP, so I found it amusing.

damnn you are on my ass about this avatar eh.:mrgreen: i think it has a austin powers-esque quality.:hump: just a little humor and fallacy. thats whats funny to me, because we had some discussions on what was appropriate on riu. i think its funny because it is just a light switch so there is nothing explicit about it. i had a couple other females tell me they thought is was funny.:peace:
