First of all, thank you everyone at rollitup.org for all the great information on this website!

Im thinkin of doin my first grow as soon as i get back to Canada! I had a light related question.
Well ive learned that HPS lights are good for vegatitave growth and Metal Halide lights help plant and root grow (i think thats right...mabe not)and i was wondering for my first grow i would get both types of lights and set them up in the grow room. 1 hps and 1 metal halide. i think il be growin only 4 plants since im a total noob at this.how many plants should i grow under these lights?
any sugesstions for a noob??:)
i just want my babys to be nice and healthy and give off alot of nice buds!!

Cheers :)

MH is best for veg and HPS is best for flowering.

What watt bulbs will u be using? This will be very imporant in terms of how many plants u can grow nicely

what do u recommend? i was thinking a 400 watt hps light and im not sure what the metal halide wattage should be exactly. wat would u recommend?

I've seen people use a 250w MH for Veg and a 250w HPS for flowering and have gotten very nice harvest.

Make sure to vent the heat from the light(s) so that your grow area don't get to hot.

If you watch Mr. Green he uses T5 bulbs for veg and HPS for flowering.

juststartin is correct. There is a mathematical formula to be applied here.

Normally, the Sun exerts approximately 10,000 lumens of light per square foot of surface area. Depending on the lumen output of the bulb you choose, will be the deciding factor of how many plants you can grow under that light. If you decide to allow 3000 lumens of light to be applied per square foot, it'll allow you to grow a specific amount of plants. This is a low lumen level, so you expect a lower yield. But at the same time, you can get better results if you use the SOG(see of green) system. Which is designed to maximize your yields. If you're not familiar with this growing techniques, I recommend you do a search on SOG in this forum.

So, let's attempt to break this down.

More lumens per square foot will allow for higher yields. So if we fall of thumb of role of 5000 lumens per square foot, and we have a 90,000 lm output bulb. Divide 90,000 by 5000, which would turn out to be 18. So this means, you can effectively grow 18 plants at 5000 lumens per plant.
Did you know, a 400 W HPS light bulb can produce around 87,000 lumens?

yea i saw that video! got alot of info frm that! and how would i vent the air anyways? wats the best way? would using the two lights at the same time would be any good? or i was thinking that when the seedling has sprouted i should use the t5 bulbs like mr. green since theyre sensitive at first. and when they get a little more tolerant of the heat(wats the way of determining that anyways?) i should hook up the hps and the halide.
sorry if i sound like such a noob i just wanna learn as much as i can and then start growing!

Cheers :)

I would always go for a 600watt hps instead of a 400 because they do so much better and well worth the very small increase in cost on the power bill.

Just my opinion :bigjoint:.

Some people use PC Fans , you can use a window fan to move more air , air hocky table fan and such to move the hot air out of the grow area try to keep the out fan high. Use a moving fan to rotate to help make your plant stalks strong.

You can use CFLs for veg if you wanted and if you wanted you can use CFLs along with HPS and MH

Use the same wattage for the MH bulb as the HPS ballast your currently using, or plan on using.

If you plan on doing a single stage grow, that is, Vegging your plans and then transferring it to a grow room, I would suggest using only one ballast. You can get an MH conversion bulb. This can save you money on purchasing a separate ballast. An MH conversion bulb is basically, an MH bulb that is compatible with an HPS ballast. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate MH ballast.

In regards to venting, please refer to my other post I just made only a few moments ago. It's located here

I dont know enough about MH lights because I dont use them so I cant really advise you on them. I use hps right throughout the whole grow.
