What's up people.. So this is what I will be getting my self into. I have a 5x10 grow room that I will be building shortly after the rain passes this week... I will be a picture whore and post pic's of my progress from start to finish... I will need help with some stuff but nothing to serious... Im tired of buying and just want to grow my own stuff and enjoy it!! So this is what I will be growing it with...Tell me what you think and what else I would need and I do have some questions...
1st thing's 1st...Budget not a big deal really but I dont want to go to crazy ya know.. The growing room will consist of a ebb & gro system and will house between 6/10 plants...Now for the question... What size rockwool should I use in the 2 gallon pails.? All I do after that is add the grow rocks right.? Lighting... I have a link to an ebay auction my friend has MONSTER T5 FLUORESCENT PLANT GROW LIGHT REPS 400 hps mh - eBay (item 270272763166 end time Sep-27-08 19:55:00 PDT) the same exact light and is selling it cheap...Tell me what you think of this light..
Now he told me with the bulbs that I 1st start out like this. I would start the plants under the warm bloom bulbs. As soon as the plant emerges, immediately switch over to the grow " daylight " bulb...When the plant is big enough to form buds, switch it back to the bloom bulbs... What do you guys think about this set up with the light. Or what do you guys suggest on lighting.? Now I found on ebay a 24 hr multiset timer... So what I was thinking.. I can run lights off 1 timer 12 hours on 12 hours off, my watering system 3 times daily correct? My intake/exhaust fan I will have on a time also...Now with my intake/exhaust how many hours should I run this? It will be filtered with a carbon canister... I know the room has to be a steady temp and I dont need it to get too hot so Im guess the fans dont Need to be on all the time or the temp wont stay steady? I just want the best ventilation for the room.. For the humidity should I have a " humidfyer " I dunno if i spelled that correctly... I can get a CAP AIR atmosphere Temp/ Humidity Controller for like 125 bucks witch is well wourth it... So if I just hooked up the intake fan to this and just leave the exhaust fan running all the time so there is good circulation in the room correct? What else am I missing that I might need help on...Im going to do test runs with seeds that people gave me I dont want to burn a good crop " seeds bought " and rest 200 dollars wourth of seeds and just get use to this and the food for the plants... If i forgot anything please chime in and help a grower out...Well its time to eat and chill out for a little while...Lets hear sum feed back!!! Now GIMME THE SPLIFFF bitchhhhhhhhhhhh....

Dude, first of all that t-5 setup on ebay is way too much money for what it is. You can buy three shop lights at home depot for less than 100 bucks, hang them up next to each other and your set.

Secondly, I have the ebb and grow and I have 24 plants in a 5 x 5 grow tent under 1000w HPS. I dunno why you want to grow just 6 or 10 plants, pretty sure it comes with 12 grow sites standard. This is my second grow and not too long ago I was a rookie like you so listen to what I have to say it will save you time and money.

The first step you should take is selecting a light. I have 6 32watt T-8s (like T-5s but bigger) I use for vegging and they work fine, less than $100 plug and play ready to grow. You could use them to flower, but if you want to grow serious and are trying to approach yields of 1g per watt you need some HID. If you can only choose one type (MH or HPS), choose HPS. If you want to go with a 2 or 3 bulb setup, get 1 each or 2 hps/1 mh.

Once you know what light you are going to use, setup your grow space and plug in the light. See how hot it gets in the room. Then setup your ventilation. Air cooling the lights can cool down the room quite a bit but I experimented with several different ventilation setups and found one that none were getting my room down below 85 degrees, so I purchased a 10,000 BTU/hr portable Air conditioner from Home Depot for $250. Brings the temps down 10-15 degrees. Skip the fancy enviromental controller for now, just get a hygrometer that tells you temp and RHumidity. Unless you can't for some reason, I'd run the fans 24/7, believe me they make very little difference in the temp of the room and you want to have fresh air coming in and stale air going out all the time so your babies can breath.

As for the carbon canister, you probably won't need it until you bloom but set it up before hand becuase it is a lot harder once your plants are big and your space is restricted.

For costs, you are looking at about 500 bucks worth of lights and 200-400 on fans depending on how fancy you get. Carbon canister is a couple hundo. Other various expenses are a couple hundo. My setup has two grow tents, one veg and one bloom, and two vortex fans, one that moves air from the veg room (where the AC is) to the bloom room, the other is in my bloom room and sucks the air out of the room and through a carbon filter. I also have a digital ballast that was $300, but it runs MH or HPS, and has a "dimmer" switch so I can run a 1000w bulb at 50% or 75% power... it is a very versatile ballast and I highly recommend it (manufactured by Quantum.)

If you have the same Ebb and Grow I do, the controller bucket already has a timer on it for feedings, just get a cheap timer from HDepot for you lights. I water every two hours when the lights are on and the plants love it, but just for 15 minutes each time. Preferrably you would only water until the buckets are full but the timer on the controller has 15 minute intervals as the minimum.

And one last thing, don't use rockwool for your medium, it holds too much water for this setup. I use Hydroton, a particular brand of expanded clay volcanic rocks, but any brand of grow rock should work. They dry out quicker but let the roots breath better. The actual clone or seedling might start out in rock wool, and you just bury the rockwool under the grow rocks so it is about half covered. You want your flood level to just reach the bottom half of the rockwool, any more is too much.

Good luck and keep me posted.
