can anybody help me....me and my girlfriend are solo smokers, we like to smoke by ourselves alot of the times, and im looking to grow just a couple of plants using the SoG method. What im planning for is 1 mother, and only about 2 or 3 clones to supply us. Can anybody help us with what we might need to get the op off the ground... To help any questions, I have a 70 watt hps ballast, and a 100 watt hps ballast. I've heard that Hps can make a plant stretch if used from the beginning. Now keep in mind that im pretty broke, and this is the reason for the grow. my question(s) are these

are Cfl's good for the mother?
how many and what wattage?
any good cheap soil at walmart or lowes?
Do i really need ferts?
how long before i can clone the mother?
Does anybody have a step by step instruction guide for SoG?

First of all you can use the search feature in the upper right hand corner to expand on the some of the responses I will be giving you

1. are Cfl's good for the mother? Yes CFLs are great for the mother. Depending on the size of the area where the mother will be grown I would say 2-4 CFLs (2-42 watts or 3-4 23 watts) You can usually find the 23 watt bcfl bulbs on sale. Last week they were $.98 each at ACE HARDWARE, so just look around for the best buy.

2. any good cheap soil at walmart or lowes? If your on a budget any indoor soil will do fine. Some may work better than others, but on a budget its entirely up to you. I personally use Miracle Grow seed starting soil because its light and airy so my roots can develop fast. That runs about $3-4 dollars at Home Depot

3. Do i really need ferts? If you use Miracle Grow or any other indoor soil you will not need ferts for at least 2-3 months (so that will save you some cash). The next best thing would be molasses, which I use once they are in flower.

4. how long before i can clone the mother? It depends on the growth of the plant. Once the mother has branches or big leaf sets that you can clone, you can start. I would say at least 1 month since this is your first grow.

5. Does anybody have a step by step instruction guide for SoG? Use the search feature for this, there is a ton of stuff online.

As for your HPS, no it wont cause the plant to stretch, stretching (in my experience) only happens when your using florescent tubes and cfls that are too far away from the plant, causing the plant to reach toward the light (aka stretching)

If you have any other questions feel free to ask...we are all here to help each other

what is the purpose of molasses? how do i "apply" it?

It is just like any carbloader it give the plants an extra boost of during flowering....theres a lot of debate on if it works or not, but in my experience it did. Thats why I recommend it.
To use it, you add 1-2 teaspoons to a gallon of water and you water your plant like you normally would, except theres a little extra in there
