Getting started.

Hello. I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you guys how new I am at all of this so I'm just going to roll up my sleeves and get straight to the point if that's okay with you.

Being a newb I figured the best way for me to learn is to experiment with some bunk seeds out of a $20 bag of crunch so if I fail I'm not losing the farm, no pun intended. I have NO idea what strand/variety these plants are and all I can say is that it's not the best stuff I ever smoked, but it got the job done pretty well. If you can tell me by the pics then by all means please do so.

I began with germinating the seeds in a fashion I learned in good old science class from back in my school days: moist paper towel, on a plate, under a bowl. They sprouted in 3 days, all 13 of them. I only kept the four you see in the pictures because they looked to me to have the largest/longest tap roots and I just assumed they were the "healthiest."

I planted them in your everyday backyard soil in a pot to see if they sprouted from the dirt, and once they did I rushed out and purchased the most expensive bag of potting soil I could find at Lowe's (which turned out to be Miracle Grow Potting Mix with some kind of Miracle Grow continuous feeding compound that's supposed to feed for up to 3 months) and transplanted them into some freshly bought 8" plastic pots.

I always heard that lights are the most important factor and closeness of said lights play a major part in the plants' growth, but I had to make due with what you see here FOR THE TIME BEING. This is why I'm here. I bought 2 GE energy smart 90 watt (26 watt actual) CFLs that put out 1300 lumens each. I know this is nowhere NEAR what I need for my closet space of 4 sq. ft., but they HAVE to be better than the 60 watt incandescents I used to get them started, right? But I had a 250 watt Sylvania MH lamp in my cart prior to purchasing these lights and damned if I knew what a MOGUL base was. Needless to say I put the light back after talking with a clerk to do some home research on ballasts and what not lol.

How would you guys proceed with this set up? The light fixture you see is the best that I have ON HAND, and the only reason nothing else is up is because I have no idea what to look for in regards to lighting fixtures and wiring setups. What would you do with these four little guys (or girls I hope)? Also is this soil I'm using any good? Will I need nutrients? I'm watering every day, but MODERATELY. Just a couple of squirts here and there to relinquish my own fears of parching the younglings.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

looks good man, im switching to CFLs soon, they're way cheap so you should throw some in there and youll be set
Thanks, man. CFLs are what I have now, but I heard it through the grapevine that the general rule of thumb is to have at LEAST 3,000 lumens per square foot of space used, and I'm using 4. By these calculations I should have a lamp or combination of lamps that produce 12,000 lumens, right? These CFLs are only 1,300 apiece @ 26 watts each. I would have to have 3 of these lights per plant for a total of 12 to equal 15,600 lumens @ 312 watts, right? Wouldn't a "cheaper" alternative be to purchase a 250 watt MH? The only reason I didn't get one in the first place is because I needed something asap and I have no clue how to wire or mess with a Mogul base MH. The base isn't as small as a regular incandescent and I'd have to either order a whole setup, which I can't afford, or custom make one. And I'm no electrician lol.

Ive read that the CFLs to use are the "daylight" ones, are those what you have ?

Um, I'm not sure what the daylight ones are. Would it say on the plastic casing? Mine only says "Flood Light" R40 Equiv. All I know is they're bright white, the whitest lights I've ever used, none of that yellowish look like a regular light bulb.

ok drop the lights as close to the plants as possible or in ur case bring the plants up. u have some major stretching. as soon as u can get a fan going in there to strengthen up the stems. miracle grow isnt the best to grow in but ive used it and its worked. as for lighting. invest in some HID's. check out my sig. and drop by if u need any more help

Cool, thanks a lot. Yeah, I brought the lights down to about 4" above the tallest plant, and the lights give off very little heat so I don't see a prob there. Like I said earlier, I was going to get a MH lamp but I don't know anything about Mogul bases. Do they have a good lumen bulb for a standard fitting that I can buy instead of making a custom setup?

As for the fan I have an Aloha Breeze oscillating tower that is facing the wall because even on low the little plants bend like they're in a rain storm lol. But I do have a fan in there, albeit I just put it in there 2 days ago...

ok if u can put ur hand under the lights and if it doesnt hurt, thats how close u can put em. All HID's need ballasts that correspond to the bulb's wattage. Any HID's will do for growing as long as ventilation is sufficient. but as soon as u can, upgrade on lights. read up on the HID threads theyll help alot

Thanks again, bro. If lights are my only problem then I can get some new ones this week, no prob. What about nutes, though? When should I start feeding? And what's a good indicator as to when I need to water?

nutes u wont need for a while. miracle grow is already loaded with nutes... but in alot of cases its the soil that kills the plants. well alot of growers dont water often... but when they do it is very thorough. this keeps the roots from clumping up if u water everyday. but as a new grower... u should find out what watering schedule works for you. i grow hydro so i never have to worry about watering schedules.

Cool thanks, BurnOneDown, for your help.

BTW I took some more pics today of my new setup. Tell me what you guys think. Any ideas on how to improve are greatly appreciated. I upgraded the light system so that each light is independent from the others so I can adjust their heights accordingly. Hope you like! I know I do.

put some soil up to that first node. that help stabilize since u moved the light gown
Cool, thanks, I never would've thought about that. I just watered today, though, so I'm thinking that adding soil right this minute will throw off my new water schedule. I'm watering them a 20 oz. cup of purified water when I notice the soil is dry to about 1.5" down. I've read that's a pretty good indicator, but I'm not for sure. They seem to not mind thus far. So as to not throw off my schedule I'll add more soil the very next time I need water. Thanks for the advice!
