I am looking for some guidance how to handle this situation with one of my girls (plant on right).** I'M MAINLY CONCERNED WITH THE SPOTS ** First I'll post my specs:

  • 1st time grower
  • 20in x 36in x 60in Tent
  • 1x Platinum LED P450
  • 4in 190 CFM exhaust fan at top at about medium speed (using screen opening at bottom for air intake)
  • small fan in tent
  • DWC 5-Gallon
  • GH Flora Trio + Cal+Mag
  • Both plants are the fem Jock Horror strain
As of last water change (~ 4 gallons of water)

  • 2 tsp micro
  • 2 tsp veg
  • 2 tsp bloom
  • 4 tsp calmag
  • PPM 990
Environment

  • Light Schedule - 18/6
  • Light Distance - Currently 24 in, previously 18 in
  • Avg Air temp - 82 F (recent HI/LO is 82/71)
  • Avg Humidity - 40% (recent HI/LO is 51/37)
  • Avg PH is 6.2 - only this high because the first few days (before issues and rapid root growth it got as high as 7.5) I keep current PH between 5.8 and 6.1 nowadays but it definitely doesn't stay the same from day to day.
I've looked at a bunch of stuff on the internet and just not sure what is causing the spots. I had curling issues in both plants for a little while, but after raising my light to 24 in it seems like the curling is on its way out. It's now totally gone from my first plant (on the left). I'm coming up on water change day and wondering if I should dial back nutrients. If I were to bet, I'd say my issue is either with PH fluctuation or ?somehow too many nutrients? The spots only exist on the top of the leaves.

HELP!

Try this. It works great for my rdwc.

Thanks for the reply.

Yah I actually use that schedule now lol.

Notice my nutrient schedule:
As of last water change (~ 4 gallons of water)

  • 2 tsp micro
  • 2 tsp veg
  • 2 tsp bloom
  • 4 tsp calmag

I'd cut back on it just a tad. Like
1.5
1 5
1.5

Thanks, I think I'll try that tonight. The spots seem to be growing pretty rapidly now.

Hmm. I'm only using RO water to top off and I do see your point. I think I'll eliminate the Calmag. Thanks

Good timing I'm doing the water change now.

The reason being the GH Flora series is already balanced, especially at equal parts of grow, micro and bloom. Grow and bloom have the mag and micro has plenty of calcium. And those are better balanced ratios of cal and mag. Using calmag when not needed can throw off this ratio and cal and mag antagonize each other at the wrong ratios.

Ok i thought you were going to mention the minerals that are already in my tap water which is at around 200 PPM btw. I didn't know that about the trio calcium though. So this time I eliminated CalMag and went with 2, 2, 2. and at around 650 PPM If I still have probs, I'll dial down the nutes.

Thanks all for your advice. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. The good thing is the growth doesn't seem to be stunted. I'd topped (or FIM'd) a few days back and those new tops are coming in just fine from what I can see.

I'm anxious to see how things turn out from completely leavin out cal-mag.

Quick update

The curling is starting to subside so that's a great sign.

I'll update again soon.

Hey guys at this point I'd say I'm in good shape. Both plants are very happy.

The spots are no longer growing. The curling is gone.

Thanks so much for helping me out. I know things can change quickly with DWC and if I have a Calmag deficiency later on I'll be ready.
