get of the grid

thanks for that little breakdown there, i knew it was extreme but especially with gas prices flucuating.
thats not that bad bro 22 x 30 days = $660 a month for 8k worth of medicine, i pay $800 for a 4k right now, also house a/c etc becuase a family lives there

not that it matters, but I think your math is off. Your going to need about a 10kw generator to run 8k worth of lights.. you can NOT expect a generator to run at peak levels for long durations of time. Not sure about gasoline engines.. they typically burn MORE fuel than a diesel engine. But several different 10kw diesel generators that I looked at all burn about 1 gallon per hour. I don't know where gas is $3 a gallon but us west coast people are paying $4 a gallon... especially for diesel.

So assuming NO veg (18 hours). Running your system for 12 hours a day would equal $48 of gas. 18 hour veg cycles will hit you with $72 in fuel.

so 30 days at $48 = $1,440 per month.

smoke kush... if your burning 4k, and you don't have electric heat.. you should really look into going on a time of use electric rate plan. It cut my power bill in half.

I'm an electrician, and my advice is to do what you can to go solar. Generators are great, but they are costly to run, and with any mechanical piece of equipment, there could be failures, etc. Setting up an efficient solar system will be an investment from the get go, but will quickly turn around and pay for itself. Go to your local electrical supply house and ask some questions about solar options. A quality supply house will have loads of answers for you, or will know what direction to point you in.

Good Luck,

Toekn

having some idle time, this got me curious just what would be the 'mainstream' solution
found some 10 kw generators, diesel fuel, rated for 30,000 hours of continuous operation
no less than $5k for one of those, not to mention setup and enclosure costs
but that's what you'll find out there being used for commercial applications
you could save on fuel using heating oil, which lack the nasty diesel tax, i believe it would run all right
if you're running a grow op, the diesel tax police seem like a low risk

It is interesting. Given that self installed solar panels run about $4 per watt. Installing solar panels to run my new 18K watt grow room and AC units (6 tons) would cost me around $96,000 and that is without batteries and inverters and all that jazz. Seeing how that is about 4 years worth of power bills... ummm. I think I'll pass. In perfect world though... sweet.

It is mildly ironic in some to harness the power of the sun..in order to grow plants indoors.LMAO

I fit a 10kw solar system on my roof. About 550 sq ft. Completely offsets 4kw of lights and everything with it. I'm on TOU also. Between the solar and tou rates, my bill went from $800 to ~200(my solar lease payment). Including my home's power usage andwe're pretty conservative despite a 3000sq ft house

Not sure about where you're at, but around here leasing is a damn good option economically. I end up buying my system after 5 years of that 200, for just less than half of what it costs new($55-60k for mine). $2400/yr x 5yrs= $12000. Purchase price of $27k +12k=$39000 instead of $55000. May be worth looking into if you havent already.
