General questions

Having just finished my first grow, I am not too pleased by the harvest, which seems to have only yielded around 1.8oz.
Are there any recommendations that would bump me up to at least double the 1.8 that was harvested?
Also, I have additional questions within my thread

Specifications:
Room size: (L)2'x(W)3'x(H)6'
Lighting: 400w hps with euro reflector air cooled hood
Ventilation: cheap inline fan is mounted to the cieling, a tube leads from there to the exhaust port on my light
Pots: 3, 3 gallon plastic pots were used as pots, coco coir that has been used and reused was used as my medium
Nutrients: CNS 17 Grow & Ripe and Silica blast was also used, (newer CNS17 recommends using three products, they have a new one, not sure if it is beneficial or if they are just trying to cut costs)

strain: purple kush (as far as I know)

My pots are pretty small, 3 gallons is not much, and there were only 3 of them. Would it be more ideal to fill my room full of 1 gallon pots, do a short veg time, and then flower, or would this be dependent upon the strain? - any links to Sea of Green (SOG) style grows like this with the same 2'x3' space as mine?
I imagine by having small, stacks of 1foot tall colla plants the light will be able to hit more of them if you have many plants versus few plants that are bushy?
any links to grows done like this under 400w hps 2x3?

Would it be best to do the Screen of Green (SCROG)? Or, just let the plants grow naturally? And If so, how many pots and what sizes assuming my strain is purple kush?

Why do so many people grow the strain LSD these days? It seems like some plants are just large colas without many side branches, is this a technique or characteristic of a strain?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and thinking of how to answer my questions. I hope my sentences didn't sound too awkward, any recommendations there as well? Thanks!

Sounds like you cured 1.8 oz. for the 3 plants? You averaged about 16-18 grams/per. Actually that's not terrible for a first grow this time of year. You don't have enough space to do a scrog grow so you should concentrate on growing 3 bushy plants next time. If I was you I would keep the seedlings in solo cups for 2 weeks so they build up a quick root system and start to green up above ground. When the seedling is 2-3 times as tall as the cup is wide you transplant into small 1 gallon/4 litre pots for vegging. If I want bushy plants I FIM the top cola with 1-2 weeks left to veg. I'd veg clones for 4 weeks and seedlings for 5. I TP again from the 1-gal. pot to a 3-gal. pot a week before flowering. Then when you put them to 12/12 make sure they are up near the light bulb. Close to light = more lumens = more growth. With the temps in the 80's in my flower room I have a fan going 24/7 and have adjusted my daily watering upwards because of the heat. A plant that would normally get 16 ounces of nute water every morning now gets the morning ration as well as another 8 oz. in the afternoon. Good luck and keep us posted. BigSteve.

how many gallon pots are you saying to put into a 2x3 foot space? how far to space them? TP means top?
Wouldn't it be best to plant straight into the 3 gallon container? why transplant?

what kind of harvest do you get? what I got is terrible for a 400w hps, the yeild could have been way higher. Isn't this common knowledge? A lot of beginner growers are pulling 100+ grams easily! But I'm just trying to find a link or reference to something similar as this. I'm looking for efficiency through yeild.I want to make a big harvest ya know? this is no where near 1 gram per watt.

itd be good if i could fill the room with 3 containers and get that yeild, but i'm not sure if i could put more in there and have them get enough light to still produce

Also I've never grown it but ive heard that the true purple kush (clone only) is somewhat of a finicky plant with lower yeilds like a lot of kush varieties. They tend to have lower yeilds with a higher potency level. Granted the yeilds aren't that low but with every grow you will increase your yields. Maybe try a strain that does better with the stresses of first time growers. Northern lights was a very easy and resilient plant. Right now I'm running a g13 labs pineapple express. Its a hybrid that I am very pleased with as far as resilience and bud structure and its also a pretty stabilized line. As far as lsd I know there is an lsd strain but if your referring to a training technique its actually LST which is low stress training. I personally scrog and lst. Get on YouTube and this forum search lst and scrog. Those two techniques alone greatly increased my yeilds. good luck and be patient. you will get it over time

1 gram per watt is for an extremely experienced grower with perfect conditions. You could increase your yeild with 2 large plants scrogged in your 2x3 area with a 400 but you would do better in that space with a 600 if you can keep your temps right. A lot of factors play into your yeild, air flow and exchange, lighting, temperature, humidity, strain, stressors in the grow environment. Just go through and figure out where your problems are. What temps are you averaging? I veg in a 2x3 area with a 400 but i flower in a 3x3 tent under a 600. I like the 600 a lot more. Next upgrade will be an additional 4x4 tent with a 1000 in it.

maybe try a run in just some fox farms ocean floor soil. It comes with enough nutes for the first few weeks of growth and when I'm not running hydro I run ocean floor. Very good soil imo. You may do better with that over coco

I listed my specs
so with that in mind

what sized pots do you think I should use?

some people use many small pots or a few big ones. Would each work ? what size pots would be ideal for my room size? do I want two pots to fit into my room perfectly? or would that be a little excessive?

I personally would do two big pots. One on each side of your space evenly spaced with a screen over the top. But you can do either with most likely very similar results but just more pots to water. I saw your specs but you didn't list your temp or the fluctuations in it.

I'm still pretty new too but here is something to consider for pot size. How long do you plan to veg? From my understanding you should have at least 1 gallon for every month your plants will grow. If you veg for say 4 - 5 weeks, then flower for another 9 weeks, you should probably have 4 gallon, or more commonly, 5 gallon pots. The more roots, the more fruits.

Grow 3 plants in 3 gal pots and treat them right, you should get 2 zips easy per. You have had your practice this time, learn and improve. peace

It all comes down to practice mate... Once you get a few under your belt im sure you are going to be able to harvest alot more than double 1.8o'z off of 3 plants...

I dont see how that information would help answer my question.
lets assume the temperature is under control, and if it is not then what is your proposal?

if 1 gallon per week then I guess maybe I should use 4 gallon pots, I don't know if i'd be better to do more plants or less. I'm still in the dark even though there is "experience".
kind of like battle ship, you don't know your getting close to where you want to be until after a few tries, I am still in the experimentation phase. I do not know what I'm going to do differently next time, probably both more soil capacity pots (cococoir) ie larger pots and more plants. But i'm not sure if it would be best to change both variables at once, probably not but if it had an effect the payoff would be double bonus.

can someone please provide some more insight? would fimming be good for my circumstances?

My question is how long did you veg? And how large were the plants before you flipped? If you look at my autosignature, you'll see the details of my first grow. I flipped at 5.5 weeks because my plants were going to outgrow my tent. I had the same light and tent size as you. I got 3 oz off each of two plants, so a total of 6 oz dry weight.

The other poster used the acronym TP, and that meant transplant, not top. I did top and lst a bit.

If you answer the veg/height question, I might be able to give some advice. Strain might also be an issue. You should definitely grow a heavy yielder if you're only grow a couple of plants once in a while (like me).
