I have two 30-40 gallon trash cans I tend to keep full of water for watering purposes. Can someone tell me why all of a sudden the trash cans after about a week lately are smelling really raunchy one almost smells like rotten eggs/sulfer after so long.. this will be the 2nd time im scrubbing and rinsing them before refilling but DAMN i went a LONGGGG time before without ANY issues.. anyone know?

Make sure the problem is not with your water source. It's possible.

More likely though, your cans are contaminated. There's probably a film of bacteria on the bottom that you can see if you wipe off the bottom of the inside (once you dump it). You'll need to bleach the can with a 5% (1 part bleach to 20 parts water) bleach solution. You don't have to fill it with 40 gallons, just make sure the bleach solution is in contact with the interior for 10-30 minutes. Then dump and rinse real well (I mean well, like 2-5 minutes) with water, and air dry. If you can clean one on one day, then one the next, you can let it dry overnight to make sure any residual bleach dissipates.

Going forward, look at your process. Are you using the same cup for water that you use to carry soil? That sort of thing. Use a dedicated container for the water and clean it as well once in awhile.

If you're an indoor grower, this question would be best addressed in that forum. They may have some hints for keeping your tanks sterile.
