Medical Marijuana Shop Offers Free Joints to Help with Food Drive

:joint::joint::joint::joint::joint::joint::joint::joint::joint::joint:

BLACKMAN TWP., (Mich) -- It's a food drive that's sure to catch your attention.
A Jackson County medical marijuana shop is offering up to four free joints in exchange for canned goods.
It's an offer Tom Downs, owner of Canna Care on West Ganson Street in Blackman Township has been advertising since Tuesday.
"Every patient that comes in and brings in two cans of non-perishable items, we'll give away one pre-roll marijuana joint," said Downs.
He told 6 News the maximum amount of free joints patients can get is four. So far, at least 100 people have come into his shop to donate.
"Well the concept is simple, I want to give back to the community," said Downs. "A lot of people in Jackson that are hurting."
Downs stressed everyone must have a valid Michigan medical marijuana card to get the free pot.
"If you're a non-patient, then obviously you can't get any medicine from us, but if you're a non-patient and you want to contribute to the food drive, you're more than welcome," said Downs.
"We are very very strict," he said. "I turn away people all the time because they don't have the proper identification."
Downs has already filled up one box of food and donated it to the Jackson Interfaith Shelter.
Rolanda Triplett works at the shelter. She told 6 News, "We don't pass judgement as to what people do in their private life or their organizations. We have a goal and that's to keep the shelter running so that we can keep people off the street so their donation is appreciated."
Canna Care will be accepting food donations in exchange for joints through March 1.
It's not exactly clear if the free pot for food is legal.
According to the Jackson County prosecutor's office, it is illegal to give marijuana to anyone, even with a medical marijuana card, unless it's coming from their registered health care provider.

Good plan though! If every caregiver in the state did something similar with a charity I bet you would see a positive change!

And folks wonder why some people love to point to things like this and call for more restrictions.

The classic quote I saw about this today was 'I wonder if they finish the food drive before they are raided???'

Just a stunt by a dispensary, no more. Unfortunately it makes all of us look bad.

JESUS DOC! So A guy gives joints away in trade for food for the homeless and you're there to call it a stunt that makes us look bad? WTF is your point here bob? The more of your posts I read the more I question your motives. Thanks for certifying patients but your opinions on shit like this rub me the wrong way. Just another stupid opinion from a pot doc, no more.

Is this the same place that tried to do this for voters or a petition?
Can't remember exactly what they were planning to do; but they got told not to by someone.
If it is they sure are persistent; got to give them that.

Ah yes.

Ok, right after the McQueen decision a DISPENSARY puts out a promotion where there give away a schedule 1 narcotic illegally under the guise of a food drive.

Ok, lets say instead of cannabis, this was vicodin. Open a checking account, take a test drive, sign up for the walk a thon and get a free vicodin. Don't you see how this makes us look in the eyes of the general public, you know the Non-Cannabis general public that was responsible for most the 63% that voted in this law?

Did you by chance read the comments on the MLive Article 'I voted for this law, but this isn't what I voted for. I was mistaken'. Read them. That is what stunts like this do. Look at the big picture for once. Things like this erode support for the entire act.

No that was Lansing, but at least you get the point. It is not something we should be doing if we want to say this is legitimate and medicine.

What part of the McQueen decision don't you understand man? 1 caregiver, 5 patients, anything else is a violation of the act. To do this right after the ruling is foolish.

It is a great plan, helping feed the hungry. Many have done that, I donate myself, but to tie it to a 'joint' ruins it.

Let's say at any point the FEDERAL gov decides to do anything they want? It's still a schedule 1 narc that you're helping people obtain illegally from a federal stand point. you got this high and mighty above you attitude like you're walking on water obeying all the laws when you're breaking federal law-or at least helping people break federal law. so out of one side of your mouth you're a law abiding doctor helping patients but out of the other anyone not following your lead is a dirty criminal. that's my problem with you doc-you're just as much a dirty criminal as any one of us from the federal standpoint so hop down off the high horse bub. it's all ruined from the federal standpoint. you give out legal advice like if you do this or that it's legit and legal but it's not. then you jump people like this guy who is giving meds out AND feeding the homeless and say he makes us look bad. your attitude makes us look bad.

Doc, your opinions make you look bad! There is nothing anyone can do with this plant short of beating someone down with a fat brick of schwag that can make us look bad! The only one hurting the movement are the one afraid or too stupid to do a publicity stunt, that actually helps people. Some people?

Nice deflection from the actual point. Again, what part of the McQueen decision don't you understand and did you read the comments from the general public? Get back to me on those.

I get the SC ruling on Mcqueen-nice return deflection doc-care to weigh in on the fact that you're a federal criminal? You are aiding people in commiting federal crimes, no? You spend all day helping them to violate federal law, the right way (your way). You tell us all the right way to ignore the feds but when it comes to this one state SC ruling you're squeaky clean and have to follow it limiting access. We as a community do need you on our side but you need us too. You are as big a grey area as any state law about medical marihuana.
