For all new growers with questions... Tons of information and answers..

. feel free to take a look.. links in my sig....
I checked out your recent pics. In a word .... WOW. So THAT'S what the amber trichs look like huh? Kind of like extra krispy golden hash browns. Very helpful thanks. Got the space heater now so we're back on track. Has an actual temp setting so skipping the extra controller for now. Great link though. Will definately return there for the next grow. Lot's of cool gizmos ($$$!). Good luck with the pups. God luv em!

thanks for the compliment bro.. i've worked hard to make this a good first hydro grow for myself.. and i must say i am very happy...

the trichs aren't ambering yet.. still a couple weeks away... FUCK, i need to change my res asap... sorry... that was WAY WAY off... anyways.. the amber you see, or the golden cast, is actually the HPS light.. i use my phone to take my pics.. and it has a setting for floros.. so the ones that look really nice are under the floros.. the super golden pics are the ones from under the hps lamps... if i turn them out, the girls under them are just as frosty white as the others... i'll make sure to take some comparison pics and post on here of the difference between the milky and amber trichs... or even some pics to illustrate when you want to harvest for the different buzzes.. thanks for the idea bro!!

I am growing white widow, lsd, and sC and they have all turned light green. Very light green, almost yellow! I am using foxfarm feeding schedule but have started adding bat guano for more N. I assume that is the problem because there is no burn, the PH is 6.8 and the temp and humidity are perfect. How long should I expect the N to take charge and get me back to my normal green color?

Oh. OK then I'll definately be looking for the instructional pics to follow. Because I've poured over a fair amount of grow guides and such and have never really seen really good example pics like you described. It might not be possible with your phone, but I find the super close ups most helpful. Some of the others are still impressive just not as informative. Rock on! And thanks again for sharing. If I get up the nerve, I'll post a pic or two of my own progress. Peace Bro.

my plant is already showing signs it is a female. it has hairs coming off of the stems and branches all over. does this mean i should switch it from veg nutes to bloom nutes right away? will it hurt the plant to keep vegging it a little bit longer? how long is too long?

your ph is just at the level that nitrogen starts to become unavailable... it can vary a few points.. but your close.. so it could just be an issue of your plant having problems absorbing the N from the soil... now i have to ask is that PH you are refering to the ph of the actual nute solution or the soil itself?? if its the ph of the nute solution, the soil ph could be way off from that... if its the actual soils ph, what is the ph of the nute solution you feed with??

it shouldnt take long for the N to start working from the guano.. since soil acts as a buffer, and the guano is organic, it needs time to break down and become available to your plant.. if you have good microbial conditions it shouldnt take more than a couple days... but it could take up to a week or a little longer.. it may also get worse before it gets better.. again, due to the buffer of the soil.. but dont worry just be patient and they'll bounce back..

either way dont over do it to compensate for whats happened.. over doing it can lead to nute burn and other issues... the plant can still grow with lower levels of N for a short period of time (a week or 2).. although i would never recommend letting levels drop during veg growth, you'll be fine in the long run..

i cant get the super super close pics... i am going to try to get a microscope to use.. then i can take a pic of the bud from a normal view, a zoomed in view like the close ups i have already posted, and a super close up to really show..

how long should i keep her in vegg
there's a few things to consider when deciding how long to veg..

1) available space.. you dont want to out grow the space your in.. remember in flower the plant can/will double to triple in size.. so use that as an indication when to flower.. you can always tie down your plants (LST), Scrog, super crop, and/or FIM/top your plants to make use of the space better..

2) available light.. since lights penetrate canopy and put off lumens at different rates it is important to not over grow your plant... if you have a 400w hps, for example, growing a 4 or 5 foot plant is a waste since the bottom of it wont get any light, and therefore be a waste... grow within the perimeters of what your light can do and how far into a canopy it can penetrate..

3) sativa/indica dominance of growing strain.. this can also sort of be lumped in with space, but is something seperate to consider.. since indicas are shorter and bushier in veg, and stretch less during flowering, they are better suited for a smaller space... sativas grow taller and stretch a lot more during flowering, so they take more training in smaller places but work well in taller spaces since they can fill out the given space...

i am pretty sure you have an indica heavy strain.. if you want to tell me the grow space size and lights you are using i would be happy to try to give you a little better answer..

my plant is already showing signs it is a female. it has hairs coming off of the stems and branches all over. does this mean i should switch it from veg nutes to bloom nutes right away? will it hurt the plant to keep vegging it a little bit longer? how long is too long?
what you are seeing are preflowers.. this is just the plants way of saying its mature and letting you know sex prior to flowering..

you can veg a plant as long as you want.. the longer you veg the more it will yield.. as long as you can fit it in the space you have you can veg it forever if you wanted.. thats basically what a mother plant is.. a pertetually vegged plant..

anyways you should NOT use bloom nutes yet.. start them when you start flowering.. wait until you see bud sites before introducing them.. and introduce them slowly and increase strength.. this should happen quickly since you are seeing heavy preflowers as is..

great thread buddy.

hey simpson i know the hortilux 400watt bulb is great but will the standard 400watt give six plants huge nugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i assume you mean hps??

as far as i know your harvest will be amazing with a standard 400w hps as compared to a grow hps.. the only real difference between them is that the standard bulbs dont have as low of a kelvin rating as grow lamps...

Sampson, thanks for all the info. I just found this thread, & printed your "grow 101" suggestions on the first page. I saved & plan on reading through all the way this tonight in bed. I need some help form an OG like you. I obviously am a total newbie (just joined riu a few weeks ago). Been daily burner for a few decades & am ready to take the plunge into this brave new world. Here's my deal. I'm starting out small, I have a 400w (hps or mh & both bulbs). I have purchased materials, but have not fabricated my actual set up. I saw the Mr. Green video, which definitely helped with the inspiration. I realize that NOTHING can count nearly as much as experience. So I am expecting to have some growing pains(no pun), until I get a few grows under my belt. The simple approach of vegggin under cheap fluoros & then breakin out the HID's 2 flower seemed simple enough to keep a constant crop. However, I do ot have nearly the space to set up x2 trays & reservoirs. So, I have been researching autoflower strains, especially to break my cherry on. THinkin some Auto AK & Diavlo from the reviews I've read. What are your thoughts on the AF's?? I will have ample space in about 8 mos (reocating back to west coast!!!!). Unfortunately, right now, I need a nice low key, set up to get me through til I make a break back to my beloved OR. I mean 60 days from prop to harvest sounds pretty nice. However, if they if you think they are total garbage (af's) pull-eazzze dont hesitate to advise. Right now I want to do as many auto's as I can, & also think I may pop about 5 beans each of my x2 favorite strains to try & procure x1 super mommy from either as the autos are going to need same photo period as the mommies veggin. (I am only going to get fem seeds, although I realize thats not 100% gurantee). Just tryin to give myself a fighting chance, & don't wanna have to worry bout knockin around wastin time with the fellas. Anyway, how many autos do you think I could run on a 4x4 tray under my 400 watter. And frankly, I am totally open to ALL suggestions my brotha. I have some dough, so i am cool with some investments if you would advise different materials, methods. alternate lighting to augment my little 400watter. But I will definitely be making a move to purchase gear & to begin some type of construction this weekend. I have some resources. (Obviously I'm not JP Morgan, but I don't mind investing, if it is prudent). Any & ALL input would be appreciated. Obviously I have some major decisions to make in just a few days. I was going to top drip on the autos for the first x2 weeks under the mh bulb (@ a descent distance), then drop them to ebb & flow tray (which is not even constructed yet, however I am very confident I could construct within a few days) & hps bulb when getting closer to flower time. I need help bro, I'll stay tuned & hope to hear from you soon! & if I never hear from ya, thanks again for imparting all that info! (also apologies for being so long winded, just a bit excited & wanna make sure I go into this w/ as much info as I can from a true OG). Thx again

well i will give you a few answers and will be happy to answer any other questions you may have...

1) autos are great.. in fact i plan on using them on my next grow for a couple times.. my flower room (once built) will be empty until i get some new girls vegged, so i plan on filling her in with a ton of autos.. and also in my veg room i will have open space so i am thinking about sticking some in there as well... i have seen a couple grows with them and am very impressed...

2) you are definitely on the right track keeping with FIM'd seeds.. make sure to watch for the occasional hermie or male that slip through.. but all and all you shouldnt have to worry too much..

3) make sure you can control heat.. the MH bulb will put off a LOT more heat than the HPS will.. so keep that in mind.. the more heat that is present means the more ventilation you need.. and if you dont have fresh air coming in you may want to think about CO2 supplementing...

4) invest in a good 3 part nutrient system... and additives if you want.. but a 3 part system is in your best intrest.. also make sure to purchase a reliable ph meter and EC/PPM meter... good nute system manufactures - fox farms, general hydroponics, advanced nutrients, technaflora, humboldt (just search google for homepages.. i use GH and its line of additives myself.. check my journal over the last couple pages to see some recent pics of my current grow).. if you want some recommendations on PH meters or EC/PPM meters let me know...

5) if you plan on using the MH or HPS to veg from seed (you can use the HPS straight through if you want) start out with it about 24" from the starter cube.. slowly move the light down as the plant begins to grow.. if you start seeing signs of stretching move it as close as possible without it burning your plant (12" or so probably).. you may be able to get it closer.. just watch for signs of burning, heat stress, or bleaching...

6) keep a fan on at all times in your grow room blowing air on your plant.. it doesnt have to be strong air movement.. just some.. this will help keep fresh CO2 blowing over your plant so it can breath.. and will help strengthen up the stems..

i think thats about it off the top of my head.. anything else just ask!

No problem I understand. Quite a few post lately! You have your work cut out for you. I'm intruiged by the last person's comments. (She?) appearantly needs some help growing cherries?. Hmm.
i have been bust huh?? bongsmilie :)

If I were to take some auto flower/marijuana hybrid seedlings which turn out to be male, and pollinate a non-auto flowering strain that i have flowering (like bubblegum), would the seeds produced carry the auto flower trait as a dominate trait in the offspring. Or is auto flowering only achieved by directly pollinating from ruderalis with a non auto flowering marijuana female plant?

I have very hard water where I live and I do not have a way to test solids in my water. Any suggestions as to using distilled or spring water would be appreciated. I am running a DWC hydro setup. Please let me know what works for you. Thanks!

Germinating:
When germinating your seeds do you prefer to plant them as soon as the seed pops and is showing some root or do you think the tap root should be allowed to develope for 24 hrs or so?

i have been bust huh?? bongsmilie :)
You are the best in my book. Not just your knowledge, but your positve attitude. :)
I've been following the golden rule of TELL NOONE about your grow, so it's fun to have someone to chat with. Also, getting lots of helpful advise has made all the difference this time around. I tried taking some pics myself and had some of the same difficulties you did with color rendition, etc. I didn't use a microscope but rather the macro setting on my camera. Some were not half bad. I'll post soon. Would like to get your comment.

Later.

Ah Sampson, you truly are a gentleman & a scholar! Thank you so much for your time & help. And sorry, but yes, I have more questions.
Thanks for affirming af's will be viable to break my cherry on. I just received my PH tester in the mail today, it was a cheapy (like $30), but I am hoping it will do what I need. I am going to post the model # of the tester below this message. Pls. be candid & tell me if u think it is a piece of junk & I need to buy a different one. If the MH or HPS is too much for the autos @ first, should I get some flourescents to get them through seedling phase? You covered virtually all of my other questions. However, I still am on the fence regarding which type of system to use.
I found some fairly cheap self-contained 6 site dripper system (I will try to post a pick). It has a large & 16" deep reservoir, & irrigation lines along the top for individual dripers to each netted pot. But with only a 3" netted pot, how big can I grow these babies. Obviously AF's are smaller, so they might work. But what do you use those until a certain point & then move to a larger ebb & flow tray or something? I am just having a really hard time believing that a full grow & plants w/ good yields could come out of those little 3" netted pots. I plan to sprout in Rapid Rooters, then stick into rockwool cube, & through into netted pots. (Again unless you advise otherwise). Sorry for all the questions, but you are defintiely the kindest & easiest source to ask I have some across. Wish I could buy you a good brew or something! For what it's worth, your info & the confidence it is giving me for my first grow is invaluable. Preesh it all Mr. Sampson!

It's called a pH 600 WATER TESTER Meter Milwaukee pH600 HYDROPONICS. If you have ever heard of it, please advise if I wasted my money & should get a real one.
