The thread's a bit old, but you could indeed use it to increase humidity. Too much isn't a good thing, but too little as well.
For just humidity it may be possible to buy much cheaper ones at Ebay that use the same ultrasonic principle.
Those often have leds to create a "mystical" fog. I'd guess... nutrients/calcium may shorten lives of cheap ones, but with distilled water that wouldn't be a big problem.
