oh damn that is kinda gross idk if ill have that problem tho caus im only two weeks into flowering an i think i may have gotten rid of the problem, i dont see nearrrly as many as i did when i first noticed em, now i actualy have to search for em. i got my neem oil so i made up a solution an sprayed all over, even around my grow area. ill just keep laying down traps, possibly put a layer of sand on top or like you mentioned some perlite, and spraying neem oil when i should.
how often should i spray with the neem oil?
twice a week, more if needed but never in the last few weeks of flowering.,..

listen for the larve put a layer of sand on top of the soil or medium and that will smother them....
or instead of sand sprinkle some cinnamon on top of your soil that will kill the fungus the larve eat which will starve and kill the larve...

biggest problem with the gnats is them getting stuck on your nice sticky buds.... then you smoke them. so i used the sand and fly traps, i also put my pots (3 gal) inside of some XXL pantyhose, then tied the opening to the base of the plant stem. everything can still breath and even be watered but no bugs can get in or out of your medium. funny i know but it works.

it might be root aphids
very hard to get rid of
there is a product called met52 from green mt harvest in CO that is suposto work for both gnats and aphids, its a fungs that kills larve

check out some other threads
if you see some crawling on your stalk or rim of your buckets its prob ahpids.
if htey are flying round the top of your room above your lights, its prob gnats.
for gnats use BTI...but it wont work on aphids

I used Country Vet Mosquito & Fly spray--kills gnats (little bastards) and someone mentioned--Dawn dish soap--couple drops in water--I did that an not seen anymore so far.

Spray kills: flies-mosquitos-gnats & small flying moths.
