Flowering with Cree bulbs

I've read this entire thread. From what I can tell most are using around a 4:1 ratio of 2700k to 5000k bulbs for flowering...what about just for veg?

Do you guys take this... silicon? plastic? coating off of the glass bulb? I just got some of the 18w 2700k cree's from HD and they have this sloppy fucking ring of glue? silicon? around the base of the bulb and then the entire bulb is covered with some sort of silicon or plastic.

You guys take this shit off or leave it on? I already took 1 coating off because it was ripped and that's how I originally noticed that there was a coating of some sort on the bulb.

1:1, 2:1, even by themselves is ok, as they have a fair amount of red in them.

I run one with 2 3000k bulbs. Works great.

I peel it off, but I also take off most of the globes too. The silicone is just so they don't break.

I was thinking about taking the glass bulb off also.... that glass seems frosted or something, it has to be limiting the light somehow, someway - I'm not a damn scientist. I just wasn't sure if that was a smart thing to do because I think the glass bulb helps spread the light around more?

How's it working out for you without the glass bulbs? How did you get them off? I read about heating them up in an oven and then just twisting them off.

These are non-isolated and will shock you to death [possibly] without the globe on. I have them in a position where I never touch them. I even brushed up against one in an old spot and thought I was going to feel it, but just pysched myself out. No shock. But be warned.

Yeah, the glass is frosted and inconsistent too, some said maybe as much as 10% reduction in light. They seem to be just fine without the bulbs. I enjoy seeing real Cree diodes without a cover.

They are now on the second version of the bulbs. One thing that changed is the glue.

I have put them in the oven and some came off. The ones that didn't were mostly the newer ones [as of 12/2013] and probably can just go longer in the oven.

250F at 20 minutes is baseline recommendation. Don't use more heat, but more time is fine. Wear gloves for glass, two pairs is goodah....

I have also just turned the light on, and after a couple hours of running, I unscrewed them and was able to basically pry through the soft glue and remove the globe. I have also had them shatter in my hands this way, so be careful.

Someone, once suggested using a heat gun to warm up the silicone bead and then twisting it off versus using the oven. Might work .

Hey guys, great info here! I am still trying to figure out the best way to go about using these Cree bulbs.

Flower chamber is 4' high x 2' x 1.5' - I have an Area 51 RW-75 in there now and was thinking about getting 4x 18w Cree floodlights (3000k) for supplemental lighting but am unsure of the 27 or 47 degrees. Any suggestions? Or should I go for something different for supplemental light to my RW-75?

Mother/clone/veg chamber. Very small, only about 2' high x 2' x 1.5' - My plan was to keep a bonsai mother in there and take a clone about once a month to have a perpetual scrog going (so the scrog would be half the width of the box, and there would be 2 scrog plants in flower at any given time. 3 scrog screens total. 2 in flower, one vegging with the bonsai mom.). Not sure if I have the room, though. I may stagger my clones, so I will clone my plant, veg it under a screen, then take a clone from this before putting the scrog into flower, veg that clone, etc, etc..

I would love to have my veg chamber all LED as well but I am really at a loss on what way to go here. Do you guys think I can get away with partitioning the veg chamber so I have a little bit of light on the bonsai mum (enough to stay healthy and give me one good clone a month or so) and having a good amount of light on the other side to veg under a screen?

Not really sure what to do there. I don't have a lot of height so any recommendations would be really very helpful.

Basic rundown of questions:

Was originally going to do a perpetual SoG instead of Scrog but I figured a more even canopy would be better for LEDs? If you guys think I could get better yields with perpetual SoG in this area I could go that route as well..

Your very close to the recommended coverage for the RW-75, 4 18 watt floods is too much. You want 25 to 30 watts a sq/ft and the RW gives you 26 watts sq/ft. The most I would add would be 2 of the 9 watters for side lighting but I would try it with just the RW at first. The 9 watt Crees can almost touch the plant without harm. For a bonsai mother you want less light and feed to help keep her small.

Isn't 25w per sq foot the minimum? I didn't think you could have too much light? As long as heat is controlled, I don't think they would be getting more light than the sun would give them would they? Not trying to contradict you, just trying to understand. I figure more light = bigger buds. Is light bleaching a common thing with LEDs or something? I've used 150w HPS + 250w CFLs in a smaller flowering chamber with good results, but I also am not sure how that converts to LED light... I don't go by the "equivalent wattage" - I really need to learn more about PAR and get a good light meter.

And yeah, def less light for a bonsai mum. Lately though I think I am just gonna leave the veg open and stick 8x 9.5w Crees in there for about 25w/sq foot. I've already got an 8 bulb CFL fixture I made that I can use that I think would work pretty good. I don't mind pruning the mother. I also may just stagger the clones and not even keep a mother. So veg a plant, clone it, send it to flower, veg the clone, clone it, send to flower, etc etc. I think that might be a better use of my space. I could also take a couple clones and pick the best one... only concern there is snipping my plant before sending to flower, not sure if that would affect much, especially in a scrog, if the clone was taken from under the screen, or one of the ones off to the side or something.. Still trying to work that out.

I think my main concern at this point is determining if I want all 2700k/3000k in flower or to mix a little 5000k in there, but the RW-75 may provide enough white light for them? For veg should I just go all 5000k or maybe throw 2x 2700k's and 6x 5000k's in there?

I've read varying reports of what works best!

I've gotten .9 grams per watt using only the Cree 2700k bulbs at 25 watts a sq/ft so I don't think of it as a minimum. After 30 watts a sq/ft I think you will get diminishing returns. I just got 1.3 g/w at 30 watts sq/ft with CXA 3070's,I don't think I could improve yield much over that by just throwing more light at it. The quality of the light source can be more important than the amount. The RW-75 uses cool white and 630 nm red so it's not lacking in blue so I would not add 5000k. Veg light depends on the strain and what you want the plants to do so that's subjective.

I would probably go all 5000k for veg to start then,you can always swap in a couple 2700k's if you want more stretch,they're cheap.

Do you know if there is a difference between the 9 watt bulbs and the 9.5 watt bulbs? Is one an older model or anything like that? I will probably just see what Home Depot has.. don't really want to order them on Amazon mostly because a lot of people end up with broken bulbs from packaging.

Which reminds me, captain.. I am assuming I will be taking the domes off all these bulbs and possibly adding reflectors on them?

I am very excited to go full LED now.. very excited indeed. Thanks for your help! I've been trying to get these questions answered for a bit now, there is a lot of misinformation out there!

Careful with the globes off,you can get a serious and dangerous shock from them,I just left mine on. The higher k LED's are more efficient so the 5000k uses 9 watts and the 2700k uses 9.5 watts.

If you wanted something more efficient look at some Cree CXA 3070 COB's. The HD Cree bulbs are about 86 lumens a watt and the CXA's you could run between 128 and 150 lumens a watt.
