First-timer here-Patience is my virtue

So, a friend of mine moved and gave me a plant. I have a dirt basement that noone but myself ventures into so I've got a very basic system going on right now down there. I just purchased a book and I had signed up to these forums months ago while thinking about growing, so I'll be reading things for the very first time. Right now I have a mystery plant in terms of strain/gender (just due to my lack of knowledge, I'll figure that out soon after a bit of reading, I imagine), and a few seeds in pots with Miracle-Gro I got at a local store, under a grow light. I just got temp/humidity gauges and a soil test kit so I'll be figuring more out soon and preparedfor some of what I'll face. I don't expect my first attempt to be a huge success, more a learning experience. I would like to get good at this as I'm getting older, not looking for quantity just quality for personal use.
Some questions:
-I'm a fan of the Keep It Simple Stupid methodology. Now that I have a system set-up that is very basic and possibly all kinds of wrong. What are the best places a brand newbie should go to get his game-plan?
-Is there some kind of privacy software that you are supposed to use when posting in marijuana forums? I'm not a tin-foil hat kind of person, just want to be safe and secure.
-I imagine I need some sort of journal. Any sample formats?

I hope to be a successful and active part of the community here on the forums. Any input is returned with my sincere gratitude. As for myself, I am a piano player that loves to play jazz, but for a paycheck settles for playing just about anything. I've been playing since I was 5, gigging since I was 11 and I just turned 30. Got out of a theatre gig that was driving me insane and I'm doing the freelance thing right now. Mostly weddings and background music at restaurants and clubs. I'm not looking to be famous, just to make enough for food and shelter. I have a 5 year old black lab that I've had since he was 8 weeks old. That's about it, glad to be here.

I'm doing my first grow too. Same thing, bagseed n Miracle-Grow. This place is great for getting a pot growing education ;-)

... most of what I read here suggest temperature ranges in the mid seventies and Relative Humidity at 50%. RH is my problem, I'm only at 10%, it's very dry where I live here and haven't purchased a humidifier yet.

... exactly. learn lots as you grow.

Just start a new thread in the Journal forums. There's a sticky that suggests what to put in the forum.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have done much research and work over the last few days and feel much more prepared than I did a few days ago. I'm sure the specific questions will start flowing soon, but FAQ has had my back so far.
